Another area where Apple Photos fails.

I've been using Apple Photos to sync to my devices and playing around with it, getting familiar with it since it launched.

One thing that puzzles me is that with all of the talk of syncing between by devices, Apple still hasn't been able to let me sync Albums I've created on my iPhone/iPad to back to the Mac app.

Sigh...

Another instance:
I made some favorites on the Mac app and chose to have iTunes sync those to my phone. But low and behold, the photos I've favorited on my iPhone created its own Album and are separate from the one I created on the Mac, so now I have 2 Favorites albums on my device. One made on the device itself and one I made on the Mac app.

It's little oversights like this that make me say Apple's software is half baked.

Photos definitely can't be taken as a serious piece of software for photographers, that's for sure. It might change with 3rd party editing tools but it will probably take years to get it to a level of Aperture (if it ever happens). More likely, as you guys mentioned, it's for people with their iPhone shots only, maybe some P&S images with little editing once in a while.

That's what I'm using it for, syncing to iDevices.

I use Lightroom to do all my processing. Final output goes to my folder based system in Dropbox. From there, I can send my photos anywhere I please without being locked into a system. My Google Photos points to my Dropbox folder designated for Family Photos. Apple Photos imports from my Dropbox as well.

Sat here for 20 minutes using the Faces features for my wife. 20 minutes of me clicking. Google had it all sorted for me without me lifting a finger. I only did one face so far in Apple Photos. I guess I'll do one face a day...

Now trying to import some more photos of my latest snaps, it just hangs until I Force Quit. What a mess.

BTW, with OS X 10.11 there are finally Photos Extensions for OS X. Baby steps. Tiny baby steps in the right direction. (I still don't use it, though.)

It's definitely a start but I think anyone who is doing photography on more than just a basic level will look for alternatives such as DxO or Lightroom.

Right now, it definitely is not competitive — nor, I think, is it meant to compete with these LR et al. But once a few Photos Extensions ship (I assume the guys from Pixelmator can't wait), I think the current lack of editing capabilities should no longer be an issue for most. It'd be interesting to see whether other apps can use Photos Extensions, because then they could be used as universal plugins.

I agree. I assume it might, through extensions, get to a level of Aperture, which could be great for many people.

I think prices for these might be quite important too, especially if a price of a few plugins is the same as byuing Lr6 for example.

Apple is known to come up with solutions that works even if limited at times.

Apple's iCloud pricing plus this whole conversion that happens to photos where I can't find jpg easily for no good reason, makes it not so intuitive not to mention in Apple's higher standard.

So I'm trying out iC loud Photo Library, paid $.99 to test it all out with a years worth of photos. The syncing of albums, favorites, etc work great. EXCEPT: Smart Albums created in Photos on OS X do not sync to iOS devices.

Another huge oversight in half baked software. 1.0 release.
