Another battery grumble

Another reason to grumble about the inability to remove the battery: never mind not being able to carry a spare, sometimes you need to pull out the battery just to make sure it's off!

With both of my last two phones I've had to pull out the battery to reset it as the power button wouldn't work since the phone had frozen. Given how complex the iPhone is relative to many phones, it's quite possible we'll see hangs/crashes on it too.

Plus, there have been several reported cases of phones switching on during flights (it happened to one of my colleagues on a recent flight from London), and on occasion the passenger has been asked to remove the battery.

Never mind the stories about people's phones being remotely powered up which we've seen over the last couple of months..

Apple has already dealt with this one for years! Case in point: iPods freeze too, sometimes! There is a specific procedure to reset the iPod (hold off then on, press and hold select + menu), as I'm sure there will be a specific button procedure to soft/hard reset the iPhone.

If you are on a flight, put your phone on airplane mode before you turn it off. Then if it randomly turns on, the wireless and other stuff will already be disabled. Big deal. And you'll probably be using it as an iPod anyway.

Aer Lingus (an Irish airline) is one.

And, I'd imagine, the iPhone is more likely to be clamped down on, for obvious reasons.

I am sure that there may even be a removeable battery by the times it hits outside the United States. Until then, I will deal with the non removeable battery. I will be happy just to have the phone.

Speak of the devil... I didn't have my charger with me last night so my phone's battery discharged completely. Then while charging, it (a Nokia N70) wouldn't turn on until I popped the battery out and in again.

I really hope this doesn't become an issue for the iPhone, or we'll see a lot of iPhone needlessly going back for repair.

Speak of the devil... I didn't have my charger with me last night so my phone's battery discharged completely. Then while charging, it (a Nokia N70) wouldn't turn on until I popped the battery out and in again.

I really hope this doesn't become an issue for the iPhone, or we'll see a lot of iPhone needlessly going back for repair.

I haven't heard this ever being an issue with the iPod and they have sold >100 million of them. It would be prudent to assume Apple will have a valid reset option for the iPhone as well.

Are you serious?

I don't know about recent iPod generations (my current is a 3G), but the early models were plagued with problems that forced you to reset (which sometimes worked, sometimes didn't).

If the soft reset doesn't work, simply letting the battery run down and then charging it back up will solve that problem. Just like the iPod.

That should work - hopefully.

But there's a big difference between telling someone to leave their iPod battery discharge, and telling them they have to be without their phone for 30 minutes while the battery discharges.

It may never happen, who knows. I just wish Apple had included a removable battery and cut this problem off at the knees.
