I don't want to hijack anyone else's so i figured i'd open my own. I have 168 cycles and my battery is at 87%. I've downloaded all updates, naturally. I'm curious if this would classify as a defective unit. This would be the results after a full cycling of the battery. I'm not sure what the terms are to classify a battery as defective, but being that this is my only computer at this point, I'd really like to ensure I get every ounce of battery life I can get.

Check this out: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

Where are you getting the 87% from?

That's what I was looking for. Now i just need to figure out if they consider 87% a low charge capacity as defined in the link you provided:

"Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300. "

I received the 87% from the istat pro widget that came from apple's website.

Just as a comparison, my battery says 98% after 34 cycles.
I'm actually doing a "calibration" (full charge then full discharge) as i type hoping I can get better numbers.

i went to the apple store with 30 cycles 92% battery, trying to explain the genius that it actually shows 87% right after calibration. according to him this is normal wear and that he cannot do anything about it. But he did record the issue of short battery life i complained about, and if this continues apple will have to replace the battery for me.
in short, i think that after 160+ cycles your battery appears to be in good condition if it is at 87% wear.

Here's what i'm thinking. If i've lost 13% of my battery life in 164 cycles, i'll be at 74% in another 164 cycles. At a hair over 300 cycles, losing 26% of my battery life is worrysome. I'm not gonna be a brat about it, but i'll go by and see what they say. Or maybe i'll call the apple store and see what they think.

I have 102 loadcycles and my battery is at 55%. Yours doesn't sound too bad to me..

The genius bar guy's told me that 85% was normal wear and tear for 110 cycles and 8 months old. But when I called Apple care and told him about my battery issues he just went about getting me a replacement and didn't ask too many questions about it. :)

Well I called Apple yesterday and they're sending me a new one. I just had to give them a CC # so they can put a $1 hold on it, just in case i decided to keep both batteries.

Just 1 dollar?? That's awfully cheap for a battery...how would they know whether it's defective or not?

They're not purchasing it back for a dollar, it's a hold they put on my credit card. So lets say I decide I want the new battery and don't wanna send them my old one, they'll have a way to charge me the $129 for a new one. It already qualified for the warrenty replacement over the phone, so it's classified as "defective" already, i don't have to worry about messing with it anymore. ;)
