I am new to Apple and thought I should check out this board. The only thing I ask is that it will somehow run my favorite game series. MYST. I am also getting some help on this topic on mystcommunity.com, but I though I would get your opinions as well.

I just picked up a 13" MacBook 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB memory, 160GB HD, OSX 10.5.2.

I am at the point now that if I want to run ALL the myst games I will need to run Windows. I have an XP disc and a Virtual PC disc. Boot Camp also came on my Mac. I have heard that Running a windows OS is kind of defeating the purpose of having a mac... What do you guys say about that? Which program should I use? Seems like Virtual PC is more user friendly but uses more memory since I can run both OS without restarting?

Any advise or input would be much appreciated. I am desperate to get playing these games and I have been messing with trying to load these things for awhile. (I am not real good with computer code/language, etc.)

Thanks,
Tobin Gardner

I was also thinking about getting the 10.5.4 update. Should I do that first?? It states that you should back up your files. I don't really have anything yet that I really have to back up. I don't think I have ever backed up anything. Should I just throw anything that I want to save on a flash drive?

((Sorry about all the noobie questions))

Glad you enjoy the Myst games, I love 'em too! Riven's my favorite game of all time.

RealMyst, Myst III, IV, and V are all OS X native, however they run in Rosetta (a PPC emulation layer.) RealMyst is also somewhat hard to come by. Since Myst V is fully 3D, it probably won't run that well, especially because you have integrated graphics. Since Uru Live has been cancelled, you can't play it in OS X anymore; you'll have to run the PC-only offline version in Boot Camp.

Also, you can't use VirtualPC. It never came out for Intel macs. You'll need Parallels or VMware Fusion. This would be the most convenient way to play Riven, which isn't OS X native. (It should be soon.) But it will of course run in Boot Camp.

10.5.4 is a small point update. You don't need to worry about backing up, Apple's just covering their ass. (although a backup HD is never a bad thing to have).

Thank you Cougarcat for responding with some good info, especially that bit about Virtual PC! That was my next step, to figure out which program to use. The CD that I have is labeled Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Professional Edition (Virtual PC for Mac Version 7) Then below it says December 2005 Applications. Even though it's not 2008, I did just purchase Office, which included this Virtual PC. I wonder if that's the reason that even though I though I properly installed that program, it still doesn't seem to open.

So, the next step is how much space should I dedicate for XP? It looks like Boot Camp wants a min of 5 GB. Is there a benefit of playing the games that are capable in OSX to play them in OSX? Or should I just dedicate my XP section to Myst? I want to have plenty of GB for XP to play these and some extra space just in case, but I want to use my Mac as a Mac as much as possible.

Well, you won't have to restart every time you want to play them, so it's very much preferable. Myst V and Uru: Complete Chronicles run about 7 GB total, so I'd give windows at least 20 GB of space.

If you don't want to buy parallels or Fusion to run Riven you may want to try Virtualbox, which is free. Not sure if it'll work though.

Wow, it looks like if I ONLY wanted to play ALL the mysts on Windows, I would need around 15GB HD space. (being generous)

Any help on any of these questions? ANYONE? I NEED to play these games! I am going into withdrawls!!

Cougarcat, you are awesome for helping out in these desperate times!

So there would be no other reason to play on the Mac side rather than the Windows side, other than restarting? There is only one URU game right? I just read that URU requires 4GB of free HD space and Myst V requires 4.5GB of free HD space. Do those numbers sound right? Also, it looks like I will loose all the stuff on my computer currently doing this install (of boot camp) since it says to backup all my stuff. Is that usually what happens?

Thanks again for all this noobie help.

Yes, 4 and 4.5 GB sound about right. If you're planning to be in OS X most of the time (and of course you should :p), then I'd definitely play everything you can in OS X. Note that the games should run better in Windows due to Rosetta, but probably not significantly so.

There's only one Uru but make sure you get the Complete Chronicles, as it contains the expansions. Another thing to consider is that Cyan may be bringing Uru Live back but without adding any content (although there is no guarantee that this will ever happen). You'd pay something like 25 bucks for six months of play for maintenance of their servers. This would run in OS X natively, and you'd be able to access the new ages that were released after the UL relaunch (it really isn't a whole lot).

I still have a lot to learn, like about Rosetta and The Chronicles. I did read on another forum that they took away live but are trying to bring it back, so that is cool.

Hey, I am seeing everywhere says to backup your files, but the boot camp installation instructions state that "Your original Mac OS partition, with all your software and info, remains intact."

As long as you follow the directions, you have nothing to worry about. Like the 10.5.4 update, Apple is just covering their ass.

Hey, well I hope people will still get an email because they have 'subscribed to this thread' even though its a little old.

So, I got the first myst game when I was really too young to understand it. and it was on a pc (lame) lol. But now, I just remembered that I LOVED it, and so did my brother-who, at the time, was old enough to understand it.

I managed to....acquire...Myst. Hypothetically, of course. But here's my question. When I try and run it, it says 'Classic environment is no longer supported". I really just want the easiest way to get it to work without running bootcam, vmware, parallels. Or, could I just start on myst 5 or do you need the story line? I was planning on going through all of them, but if it ends up being too much to get myst 1 to work, I may just skip to one that is ready for mac os x 10.5.4 or whatever the newest update was. lol

Thanks for the help!

Myst and Riven were never written for OS X. This guy is porting Riven, however. You definitely don't want to miss that one as it is far and away the best of the series. Worth using Crossover to play.

As far as Myst goes, if you have an iPod or iPhone, get that version. Just came out yesterday, and it's only $6. If not, then I would "acquire" (the game is no longer sold, and copies on ebay are exceedingly expensive) RealMyst, which runs in OS X. It's a 3D realtime update to Myst.

Another possibility is that if you have a PPC mac, you could put 10.4 on it and use Classic mode.

I will definitely check those out. AND lucky for me, I do have an iphone and I am in the process of getting it right now. lol Do you know if its the full game or not? Because then I will drop my quest for installing it on my mac and continue with the others in the series. Idk if I have a ppc mac or not. It was new when I bought it right before the new mac books came out. So...yeah.... lol Idk if that means anything. BUT as long as I can play myst I will be happy! lol

Thanks Cougercat!

I was searching for where to buy the mac version of realMyst, and found a mac game bundle called "Game On! Family Pack Mac" that includes realMyst being sold for $10. Seems like a much better deal then getting a used copy of realMyst off of ebay for $50+.

i am interested in playing these games..it appears that many people r having trouble gettin these games to work properly...how does the myst games work for you all?

For Myst, you have to use SheepShaver to run it through Mac OS 9 or use realMyst which has Mac OS X support.

For Riven, as Cougarcat mentioned there is an open source project (Riven X) to get Riven working on Mac OS X. There are still issues with that Riven port, but it seems to still be under fairly active development so there is still hope that the problems will be fixed.

For Myst III Exile, there is an issue with the sound on multi-processor macs (e.g. all current Intel Macs), however the problem can be fixed by installing CHUD and then using this script to launch Myst III Exile (it automates the process of turning off all processors but one and then turns them back on when Myst III quits).

For Myst IV, there is only one significant issue; the installer for Myst IV does not seem to set the application permissions correctly. To fix this, go into the terminal, type/paste "chmod +x ", drag the Myst IV program onto the window, delete the space after "myst4.app", then type/paste "/myst4" and press enter.

For Myst V, if you have an Intel Mac then you need to get the installer update to install Myst V, then it should work without issue once installed.

Thanks heaps for your efforts to fix the sound, brkirch. Unfortunately I've found that the patch has some side-effects, such as really poor performance when a video is playing or video plays for a second or two then freezes (OS 10.6, 2009 MBP). The first place I found this was in the base of the main husk on J'nanin - try playing with the little generator on the table, the scales, and the elevator.

I'm not holding out for a flawless fix to all this though so I'm using your launcher script instead, which seems to run the game pretty well. However, I was just wondering if you would mind releasing the source? I'd like to customise it a little :)

Re: MYST IV — I tried going into the Terminal and followed all brkirch's instructions — including "delete the space after "myst4.app", then type/paste "/myst4", but after I pressed enter it said "permission denied".

Did I do something wrong? Do I need to do something else?
