another macbook pro vs macbook question

Ok... I need advice. I'm contemplating between the Macbook and the Macbook Pro like so many others. How important is it to have the dedicated graphics? It's looking like it's either get the Macbook upgrade hard drive and ram or go for the Macbook Pro and maybe add more ram in another 6 months. And even with the Macbook Pro how much of a difference will I notice in Photoediting and Photoshop between the 128mb and 256mb card? Will the 64bit really help me with any of the tasks below?

Here's what I'll be using it for:

• Photo Editing (Photoshop and probably Lightroom or Aperture)
• Recording (Logic and Garage Band)
• Web Development and Design
• Word, Email and Basic Stuff

I don't really plan on playing any games.

what type of photo editing? Any thing serious you need macbook pro ... get the base version add 512 stick for 40$ and you good if you ask me.

I still think the screen is the biggest difference.

The screen size and size of the unit is critical for me. Portability and power. I sold my 17" powerbook in favor of a Macbook, and not only does it outperform, it puts the powerbook to shame.

the biggest downside is that pro apps namely final cut studio "cannot run" on the gma950. I think it's just another matter of being crippled by apple.

The question that I'm having right now is similer. I want the Macbook for school, and for writing, some photo stuff, and maybe a podcast I want to do. For that stuff the Macbook should be enough.

But I'm probably going to be watching movies on the macbook as well. I just bought the Colbert and Daily Show multipass on Itunes, and I am a big anime fan so I have tons and tons of that which I'll probably watch during the down time between classes. Do you think that I'll enjoy it on the 13" screen?

I currently have a 19" Viewsonic flatscreen CRT which I love for watching movies on, and I love a quality picture. I've thought of moving to the Macbook Pro for this reason. Do you think it's worth it?

 

[Abstract]

-Photo editing? Photoshop will run just as well on a MB than on a MBP for an app like Photoshop. Once it becomes a Universal application (ie: CS3), it won't need to run through Rosetta, and they'll run fast on both systems.

-Aperture? You'll need the MBP because Aperture needs a certain resolution and video card to run. You can bypass this through some tricks, but it won't run well anyway. It'll run better on a MBP.

-Adobe Lightroom runs great on my MacBook. It'll probably always be faster than Aperture on any system you own, and it has more editing features. I know you have Photoshop, but it's nice that Lightroom has a lot of editing features when compared to Aperture. It makes editing in Photoshop less necessary, since most times all you want to do is make small adjustments.

-Recording? It won't matter which you choose. It's mostly processor intensive work.

-Web Development? Both will handle this.

-Word? Email? Both will handle this the same.


The only difference between them is the resolution of the screens, and the chance to get a matte screen(!) which is more accurate. But colour calibrate any screen you get, and you'll be fine. If you have an external monitor, then the MB is still great. But if the screen you have is large, I'd still get the 15" MBP because it'll drive the external monitor better.

A maxed out macbok runs aperature but you can compare its speed to a earthworm. Id say definatly go with the pro, and than in a couple month up the ram to that 2 gig.
