another situation macmini - g4imac.

Right, i have been reading a few threads about the intel mac minis (solo) and how it will run circles around a 2200+ athlon. Im currently a windows user using a 2000+xp athlon, with 512meg of ram. And that seems to run all the programs i use alot with any hastle. Does this mean that a solo mini will p!$$ all over my athlon? I was going to save it for a imac (g5,17",1.7-ish w/isight) but im not too sure i want to spend an extra £200 on a machine which tecnically isnt in development anymore. If i do get a mini will need a TFT display (another reason i was gunna get a imac was because i use a 17" fat screen at the moment and it takes up too much room). Anyone know where i can get a decent apple tft display (around 17". In the UK)?

So basically im asking weither its worth spending an extra £200 on a out-of-production computer or getting a solo mini? also how long will it be intill apple decide to quit software development for the g5's all together?

If you're going to spend an extra 200, you might as well spend another 100 over that and get one of the Intel iMacs. Personally, I wouldn't buy an iMac G5 (unless I could get a really amazing deal on it). A mini would be good, but if you are going to have to spend the extra on a monitor anyway, you really should go with an iMac.

It depends entirely on the software you are running.

The Mac Mini will be fast on Universal Binary Mac software. It will be slower on older Mac programs, and will roll over and die trying to play first person shooter games at high frame rates and AA. So it depends what your expectations are.

You will also have to replace your programs with Mac versions... except for... we don't know yet what the performance of BootCamp will be with Win XP SP2 (which allows you to load your own Win XP SP2 onto the Mini and run it natively by dual-booting).

Almost any LCD screen is compatible with the Mac Mini - just choose one with a DVI input for the best sharpness.

i will be using the macromedia 8 suite as well as adobe CS2. i wont be playing games because have consoles for that. Iv seen "Apple iMac G5 17" 1.9GHz 512Mb/ 160Gb/ SuperDrive/ Airport/ Bluetooth/ iSight inc OS X 10.4 - Tiger" going for £705 (including vat) which is roughly $1,234. Im just thinking about how long it will be before it comes completly ended? I dont want to spend x amount on something and about 3 months later hear its completely stopped.

@DannySmurf - 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo are arounnd £880 which is $1,540.

buy the G5 it will offer better performance overall in comparison to the mac mini. The mini core solo and even Core Duo will almost always be slower even with UB apps in comaprison to an imac G5 1.9Ghz. The imac has Hard Drive speed, and a huge GPU advantage over the intel minis'. PowerPC will be supported for some time to come and a 1.9Ghz G5 will perform equally if not much better than your Athlon XP 2000+ in almost all apps.
