I just purchased, about an hour ago a brand spanking new 3gs. My old 3g was jailbroken and I loved it, but my wifi crapped out on me. I know what tethering jailbreak is.... But.... what exactly is the process of of rebooting with the tethering method? Will I have to restore every time or how exactly does it work? I have to jailbreak so I can use pdanet. Thanks.

When you reboot it will go into Recovery Mode.

You will have to plug it in to your computer and run Blackra1n which will allow the device to boot

Well... I tried running blackra1n.... all i got was the connect to itunes screen. Now i'm doing another restore!

read this 1st! and if your answers aren't there ask there the hope is to have one informative thread not 30 uninformative threads!

And again this is the reason I dont post here, because of smart asses like you. I've have already read that thread. It doesn't give the steps of rebooting your phone, it just clearly states what a "tethered hack" is. It also doesn't say anything about the process of jailbreaking. I wasn't asking what a tethered hack is, I was asking about the what steps you have to go about to reboot the phone. A few simple words was all I asked for. But thanks guy, you have reminded me why I no longer get on this forum!:mad::):)

Tried everything again, still just getting the "hook up to itunes" screen. Although, the blackra1n program said I was good. but was still a no go. I think I like pawnage tool a little better, but me having to have a tethered jailbreak I think it will be a pita to reboot with pawnage tool every time. Any help here with blackra1n? Thanks.:confused:

I have a week 46 iPhone, and the process for me works like this.

iPhone reboot
iPhone shows 'connect to itunes' screen
hook up usb on my MacBook Pro
Run Blackra1n
click 'make it rain'
iPhone shows GeoHotz screen
30-45 seconds later iPhone rebooted no problem, jailbreak still there
unhook from USB

Less than a minute for me from beginning to end.

Thank you so much, that I what I needed to see. Now if I could only get my initial jailbreak done!!! I'm still just getting connect to itunes.

I'm using macbook and a brand new iphone 3gs.
shutdown itunes
power off iphone
click make it rain
turn on phone
itunes opens and says that it found iphone in recovery mode
then "connect to itunes" pops up.

iPhone has to be ON (and showing the 'connect to itunes' screen) when you run blackra1n, and then click on 'make it rain'.

After doing this, you will have an app installed on your iPhone also called 'blackra1n'. Run it, and it will let you install Cydia. I stay away from the other two install jailbroken installer options.

I think the part you are doing wrong is powering off the phone. The phone needs to be on and connected to your computer before you click "make it rain." Just ignore iTunes -- click ok to dimiss its popup windows whenever it says you need to restore your phone, and wait for blackra1n to do its thing. You may need to be a bit patient, initial jailbreak may take quite long. I remember I was about to unhook mine and start over when Geohot's picture finally came up.

Got it. Thanks a million coolpix. I had to run blackra1n twice. Once to get it to the connect to itunes, then again to jailbreak. Thank you so much. Now if everyone else on this forum would be as helpful as you were, this would be a nice place to hang out!!:D:D:D

Oops, sorry forgot to mention that. Yes, you do need to run balckra1n twice, but the first time is to jailbreak your iphone, and the second time is to reboot it. When you jailbreak an iPhone, it needs to reboot because basically you just installed a new operating system on it. But since you have a tethered jailbreak, when it reboots, you get the "connect to iTunes" screen, and you have to run blackra1n again to get past it.

And yeah, unfortunately, most of the jailbreak guides assume you have an untethered jailbreak -- there really needs to be a guide for "how to do a tethered jailbreak with blackra1n." :(

Uhm I don't visit these forums often but...

Are you suppose to take all those steps? Because I JUST JB my phone...

Leave it on... hook up to computer.... turn on iTunes... hit make it rain and ta-da?

That is because you have the new iboot version that is only a teathered jailbreak so you have to run it twice and everytime you restart the phone.

That is all if you have an untethered jailbreak. People who have a tethered jailbreak have to do one more step - after hit make it rain, wait for it to reboot to the "connect to itunes" screen, then hit make it rain again, and finally, ta-da.

thank you guys for posting this thread. i'm going to be getting a 3gs on monday or tuesday, so this will releave A LOT of headaches if it didn't boot up right away haha. i'm running win7, but it should work fine with blackra1n :)

Yea.... I just figured out the second run was for a reboot. Just did my wife's 3g on her windows computer, was easy as pie. I though pwnage was easy, this is a breeze. my 1 year old son could do this. Thanks again guys.

I see, read the sticky after I posted that.

Silly Apple making people push more buttons :p

I really want to type something here, but one of my New Year's resolutions is to be nice even if it means ignoring all the posts from the OP.

What is wrong here? What exactly did I say this time? Stating a fact that blackra1n is easier than pwnage tool? I was saying thanks to everyone.
