another VH question!

I've just done my first conversion to mp4 using VH. The file was an SD movie avi file ~ 700mb. I set VH to appletv, go nuts, h.264, 2pass and the resulting file is over 2GB. I've just played the files side by side and can see no difference in quality. Does anyone know how much I can drop the VH settings by until and keep the quality or do i just need to do trail and error?

I would just go to advanced and use the "fit video in [700] MB", you could probably go to 600 or 650 and not notice much of a difference, but I would just keep it at 700.

I have done 2 pass and no pass and cannot find a difference on something I have downloaded. a one hour tv show at about 350mb looks the same with 2 pass and single pass. However there is a difference when you Rip a DVD.

the impression i got about 2pass is that it is useful if you set a limit to the file size as the first pass enables VH to get to know the file so then when encoding the file it can compress it more intelligently to keep it within the given file size.

To quote the user guide

Fit each video in - "Will calculate a Bitrate constrained to n megabytes based on the reported running time of
each video. Useful with the Two Pass option. "

Two Pass - "Will take a quick overview pass at a video to determine which parts need more resources to
encode. The second pass will encode the video using information determined in the first."
