Down on Copperline...
Another Product of Convergence, the iPhone Is Destined for Failure

Apparently the iPhone is doomed to failure because it is trying to combine two existing categories rather than creating a new category.

The original iPod was a divergence device because it didn't use flash but had a HD. I'm sure Creative would have some comment.

The cell phone is a divergence device since the first ones were luggables and should have converged with cars. Of course people still buy cars with built in phones...

Of course the Blackberry, which converged email with a cell phone; or the Treo, convergence of a PDA and a cell phone; and Win Mobile devices, convergence of a cell phone and... what was it that wince originally did?; have all been such tremendous failures.

So pity the poor fools who thought the device up, approved its roll out, and even more so those who buy this dead end device.

I see the author has written eleven books on marketing. All, I'm sure, telling everyone why they're wrong (though somehow I doubt he has a track record of actual work product to back his claims).

Also, how exactly do the aforementioned eleven books qualify one on the evolution and convergence (or divergence), and consequent success or failure of consumer electronics? His examples--albeit brief--include some of the most tortured logic I have seen in a long time.

Another hack "academic" claiming they have a clue. Ah, well, he'll make a mint in five years writing "Why the iPhone Had To Succeed," all the while telling us how smart he is, how he saw it coming all along, and most brazenly of all, telling the fools buying his tripe how they can "replicate" that success, while again avoiding any real risk himself.

Yet another article predicting the imminent demise of Apple...

The reason the iPod was so successful was it's interface and simplicity. The iPhone GUI builds on it and combines some of the best from Mac OS-X. Getting all that implemented on a cell phone will be "... like giving a glass of ice water to somebody in hell!" (- S. Jobs from Walt Mossberg interview D 2007)

It continues to mystify me why people write about the iPhone but completely miss the reason why it WILL potentially be successful, and that is the User Interface.

Cell Phones/Smart Phones/Any Phones have always had horrible interfaces. Apple's strength since the advent of the first Mac has been their UI. This was a match made in heaven. A huge consumer electronic market with a huge over-bearing flaw, and a company who is expert in that exact same area.

The only real question is why did it take them so long to get there. The iPod may have lead the resurgence, but the iPhone may be potentially their destiny.

Thank you!

I never had a problem with my Treo, but the ease of use of the iPhone is what intrigues me (among other things.)

No digging through menus and sub-menus, it (promises) to be easy to use.

I have had problems with my Treo, such as a consistent inability to maintain contact with my bluetooth headset. So nice of Palm to fix it now that my 700p is nearing EOL.

I say farewell.

i think it will fail because of price and the fact that Cingular sucks ass.
