I’ve gone through 3 pairs of these so far in the last couple of years. It’s almost as if the microphones only last for about a year or so. Do you guys using the AirPods 2’s experience the same? Do the Pro’s have the same issue with the microphone going bad after a year? I do have daily phone calls and conversations so the microphones get used daily. Just for the record, it’s only the mics that go bad, the AirPods themselves play just fine. I’m also out of the warranty period so I’m forced to either buy another new pair or get the Pro’s now

It must be something with sweat or humidity that is affecting the mics of the AirPod 2’s

I’m not alone! Yes I went through I think four pairs of AirPods 2, in all cases the microphones suddenly failed on them. I wouldn’t know until people started saying they couldn’t hear me on calls again. My theory was either dropping them into the case or using the tapping gesture caused the microphones to move or become desoldered.

I replaced them with the AirPods 3 as soon as they launched and those have been flawless. The USB-C AirPods Pro 2 have been fine too, although I’ve not had them as long.

The fit of the AirPods 3 are horrendous for my ears so I returned these after several days of owning them. Same thing with the Pros, can’t stand the seal that they create in the ear canal and the shape of them is also causing a small blister in both of my ears. I just purchased another set of AirPods 2 but this time around I bought the 2 year AppleCare so at least I’ll be protected for 2 years.

As to what you said above, I tried thinking about all possible causes as to why the mics keep on going bad but haven’t thought of it being due to using the double tap fit to answer a call/hang up a call which I occasionally do use. Do you think it’s because of that? I never drop the harshly into the case so it can’t really be the other possible cause you mentioned

Yeah I was lucky the 3s fit my ears, but they’re definitely at the limit. If they make the 4s bigger they won’t fit. I don’t fully get on with the Pros either, I’d rather not have them in my ears but the noise cancelling is very good. 😅

I used to tap my AirPods all the time while exercising on my rowing machine to skip or repeat tracks. I was never very gentle (basically just slapping the side of my head because I couldn’t take my hands off the bar for very long) so I did think it could be that. Plus they took the feature off all new AirPods which suggested to me there might have been some issue with it.
