Answering the phone when using 3.5mm car jack

Question, maybe two, that I'm not really sure how to search for.

Picked up a new iPhone a week ago. (Love it). Problem. Car has a mp3 player\3.5mm jack in the dash. Allows me to play iPod through the car, works great, used to use with my old iPod as well.

Problem. Can't make a phone call when it's plugged in, as the phone thinks a head set is plugged in. Any way to correct this?

Question two - as it relates to the first one. What happens if I use a BT headset? I have one, but it's dead. I plan on getting a new one, but am wondering what happens if that same jack is plugged in, and I attempt to answer a call using the BT headset? Does the headset then takeover, allowing a phone call?

I have the same setup in my car. I just answer it and use the car's speakers and the phone's built in mic to talk to the far end. My girlfriend has heard echo of herself on her side before but only when the volume of my car's stereo is up too high. If I keep it down to a level that is just above what I can hear clearly it works fine in my car. Plus I am able to have the conversation hands free with my phone sitting on my dash with the mic pointing towards me.

Makes no sense to me either. However, I went to make a call today, had the jack plugged in, and no sound through the ear piece. Non through the car speakers either. mmm, have to play with this a bit and figure it out I guess.

In answer to your question though, I'm guessing it's thinking your using a wired head set to make the call?

I have the same setup but with one difference, i bought the Belkin 3.5mm socket extender for the phone for about $10 and plugged the Aux cable into that. The extender has a built in microphone point for picking up your voice. The phone sits in the cupholder on the console and everything works fine - though as noted above if I have the stereo's volume too high the caller can hear themselves on echo.
