Anti-Vires for PC (well XP on MBP)

I just installed XP on my MBP and i would like to installed an anti-vires for obviaus reasons. I have norton anti vires on my PC and a lot of people said its not a good product, i have macafee on my iMac (XP) but i hate the way it updates, i have to logon to a website then type a password so that i can get an update.

Is there a product i can buy or get for free that will work well vs vires's?

Kaspersky is fairly decent and quite cheap

As far as I can see there's nothing wrong with Norton except that it's bloated. As you have a MBP as long as speeds not a major issue, as you already have Norton i'd use that.

I recently replaced Norton's with this on our Windows machine at home. Not as many features as Norton's, but gets the basic email & scheduled anti-virus scanning jobs done for what seems a lot less system resources.

This is probably the best free one.


I recommend looking for a cheap version of Norton though. Sometimes it is free after rebate.

I loved AVG 6 and recommended to everyone, but I hated AVG7. Not only did it consistantly throw up run-away processes taking up 90%+ CPU, it had the ugliest, clunkiest interface of any program I've used (and with Windows apps, that's saying something), and it stopped Eudora working (at least, it stopped working after installing AVG and worked again after uninstalling AVG). Is 7.1 any better?

I stopped using an antivirus app for a while, only running AVG monthly to double check that I wasn't infected. I then came to conclusion that, as long as I was behind a firewall, didn't open attachments unless I was expecting them, used MSIE only for windows updates, and used only Opera for porn, I was pretty safe.

But then, I wanted my PC to be trashed so I could tell my wife we needed a new computer, and the iMacs looked pretty good.

Roger that. It's extremely good for a free program. I usually use that in conjuction with Norton. Or I used to when I used Windows.

You should also get Zone Alarm Firewall (I've heard the Windows firewall described as a chocolate fireguard), Spybot-Search and Destroy, Adaware, and Microsoft themselves do a very good anti-spyware app

im all for avg free with pc cillen house call once a week just to be sure. house call is free and gets a lot of stuff avg missies. if you have the cash pc cillen + weekly house call. dont use norton whatever you do.

I'll add my name to the AVG list. It's free, effective, and has a small foot-print, what more could you ask for? Although I know a lot of people with pc's that end up having problems caused by viruses and they think they need the most expensive anti-virus software. When in reality, most anti-virus programs work well, it's just that people don't update them or run a virus scan frequently, which can be done automatically.

The only thing I have to say stay away from norton.

AVG and Adaware, and Microsoft anti spy software, also make sure that you sit behind a router.

if you want free, AVG. If you want pay, Kaspersky. I prefer Kaspersky...it might cost money, but it does an awesome job...nothing is more frustrating than your anti-virus missing something, or not being able to fix something.
