Anti-Virus Needed?

I'm a PC convert and just recent purchased a 15" PowerBook for college. So first off Macs frickin' rock. I'm moving into the dorms tomorrow and I was wondering if its recommended for Macs to have an antivirus program like Norton or something like that. Many of my friends that have Macs say its not necessary...but I thought I'd fish for an opinion from the mighty minds here a macrumors...suggestions greatly appreciated..

Don't waste your time worrying about it. There are no viruses that affect OS X. WHen I first switched, I kept it on for about a year and then I was like why am I wasting hard drive space with this thing? It never did anything but waste my time downloading updates. If I wanted to waste my time doing computer maintenance, I'd use windows.

Whatever you do......and if you just gotta have anti virus software......because of some BAD habit you acquired :D...DON'T get Norton. :eek:

Check out Apples's .Mac website or go to McAffe. :eek:
 
Thanks all...have pity on my lack of knowledge...I'll be avoiding any antiviral software...

On a side note..yes...it is clear as Yenko pointed out that I still have some bad habits/beliefs...blame PC...
 
There are no Mac viruses. Period.

There are two TROJANS (the media doesn't know the difference between a trojan and a virus so you might see articles proclaiming there are Mac viruses. A trojan basicly does not spread itself and has to be deliberately sent to you by a hacker, and you have to deliberately run it. Basicly, you have to have some jerk out to get you and be very stupid) out there, but they were proof-of-concepts and created by Intego (a Mac antivirus company) to prove it could be done and never actually released into the wild.

So at this point in time, there are no viruses that affect Mac OS X.


The Mac antiviruses out there will detect Windows viruses to make sure you don't pass them on.
