I'll be doing some work for a company that needs me to connect to their servers via VPN. They provided me with the Mac client to run the application I'll be using, which will be installed on an external SSD running High Sierra and I'll be stuck with that version for at least another year until they upgrade their DAM Digital Asset Management software. In other words, the antivirus application needs to be able to run on High Sierra and still offer the most up-to-date protection.

A requirement they have is that I install antivirus/malware software on my side. Since I have never used antivirus software on any of my Macs, I would like to know what's the best I can get, i.e. one that doesn't cause problems or slowdowns (I've heard stories on the PC side that made me raise my eyebrows).
Not looking for a free solution, I need something solid.

Any suggestions ?

Does your company require malware protection for Mac, or does it also require that you are able to detect Windows malware? If just for the Mac, I would use Malwarebytes. But if you need to detect Windows malware (in case you were to pass something on) then you might be better to use one of the traditional Windows A-V products which have a Mac version - e.g. Sophos, Avast, Norton, etc. But be prepared for some overhead.

I'm kind of surprised that the company does not provide you with the antivirus that they are using for their other workers, or has recommendations as to the antivirus software that their IT department has vetted.

They do not provide freelancers with licenced software, after all, I can't expect them to pay for my Adobe CC suite when I also work for other companies.
It's a mixed environment, PC and Mac. The Macs installed there have Trend Micro antivirus, as do the PCs ; they also provided me with a PC laptop to run some specific Windows software, so I'll need some form of virtualization to run Windows, probably Parallels.

I have made the decision to go freelance so it is only normal that I buy the software myself. I cannot expect every client to provide me with the necessary tools to do a job.
Anyway, don't know about that Trend Micro software, it's not really a name that rings a bell with me, so don't know if it's any good.
