Any 20" owners with a good screen?

I thought I would create a thread for 20" owners to go with the 24" one.

Mainly because I sold my new iMac as I needed the funds back for something urgent, and now I have the chance to buy again with my 'free' iPod. But I did notice the colour shift really well in Meadowhall Apple Store as they had a 20" and 24" side by side (I didn't really check the 24" for its own defects as there were kids playing around on it and I wasn't there to purchase a 24" at the time).

Been out around 2-3 months so maybe a few manufacturing changes by now.

I have had my 20" 2.4 about a week now. I was very anxious before getting it because of the screen gradient issue.

Out of the box, the screen is washed out. I calibrated with a Spyder colorimeter.

There is a slight varient in brightness from top to bottom, but I must say it did caibrate very nicely.

I have a Samsung 244T hooked up as a second monitor (which is a fabulous monitor for photo editing)

Side by side, both are calibrated, and there isn't a huge difference between the two in terms of tonality, contrast etc.

Does it really matter if some of the posters tell you if they got a good screen? It doesn't mean you will get a good one. The TN Panel is suppose to have a color shift. If you like it great, if not buy something else otherwise these threads on this matter are getting to be snore. Besides most of the posters will misunderstand the thread and post that they have a bad screen and not a good one.

Au contraire, iHLdan! My 20" ALU iMac had an ultra-fantabulous double-plus-magnificent display -- as you can plainly see from the photos below. I really, really hated to return it, but the light gray symbols on the remote control buttons clashed badly with my office decor.

My 20 inch screen is perfect in every way. Honest. iWeb '08 on the other hand is a total pile of crap that does not seem to recognise '06.

Leon, please, please, please tell me that I am misunderstanding what you just wrote. Am I correct in understanding that the color scheme on the buttons of the Apple remote were so out of place with your office that you returned the entire iMac? Huh? Please explain because that doesn't make sense.

Loen returned it for that reason... I see it on my new screen as well, not as extreme as his but it's still noticeable even after I calibrated.

Well, your sarcasm isn't really needed as I wasn't trying to be rude to you but based on your response good luck with your iMac. Mine is perfect so I could now care less about yours.

Just curious to know, cause I can't seem to find a straight answer, are you guys saying there are some iMacs shipping with the lower quality (TN) displays and some that aren't, or are they all shipping with the TN display and only some are noticing the lack of quality?

I'm getting an iMac soon and I don't want a crappy panel.

Funny thing is, when you look at the screen from the top -- the screen is putting out a consistent color/brightness.

The viewing angles just sucks, and the problem tend to occur at the normal viewing position -- which really sucks.

Something that was really annoying until I found an OK seating position and screen angle -- making it tolerable.

My understanding is that the 20" iMacs are all shipping with TN panels, whereas the 24" iMacs are shipping with S-IPS panel (I think), or maybe S-PVA panels instead.

While true this is not why people are complaining. The issue is the ridiculous variation in the screen color/brightness from the top to the bottom of the screen. Everyone knows now that the 20" uses a TN panel which provides lousy viewing angles. But this is NOT the reason the display is inconsistent from the top to the bottom, that is due to poor quality control.
