from what i gathered, the baseband is the OS for the modem part of the iphone. So my question:

Is the baseband update that comes with some of the firmwares purely a move by apple to tackle the sim unlocking?
OR
does it at the same time offers any advantages/improvements whatsoever?

quality answers appreciated...

thank you.

EDIT: Pls clarify my doubt below too. tq.

"Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable." -Dev Team Blog

1. Does this mean, for iphone 3G and older; there is no concern at all on baseband versions?

It brings both. It patches all bugs in the baseband that can cause trouble connecting to the network, dropping calls, etc. It also patches up the method for unlocking. So yes, updating the baseband is advantageous from a stability of network connection point of view. But if you wish to unlock, then its best not to.

With the iPhone 3G the thing is that we had yellowsn0w which unlocked 2.28.00 baseband. However, Apple this time released a newer baseband (with software 2.2.1) to patch out yellowsnow and further released a newer baseband to fix stability/connection issues in 3.0.0. Now, the Dev Team released UltraSn0w, which unlocks this newer baseband, so everyone can update to the latest and thus, get the most stable and working baseband and also be able to unlock.

No point having sections in forum if everything just lump into one. Stop responding to posts that are in wrong section will prevent future posts like this one.

He is asking for what are the benefits of a baseband update also a second question. It is still pertinent to the iPhone general forums.

Now, if he asked how to jailbreak, then it be a different story.

Do we really need to get in this? Preventing baseband update can only take place by jailbreaking, so this is obviously a hack related topic and hack only.

Maybe I was answering the last part of his post genius....

Wow, you are serious...ignore list you go.

Go ahead. This forum is lacking serious thinking power lately...

mmm, seems I overlooked that fact, sorry about that... let me edit that out.

I hear you.
Some people just like to argue and pick on little things instead of actually trying to help members.
He's one of them.
Ignore......
Read, genius.

Wow, you two did nothing to help this member with this question besides arguing for no reason.
Who cares if its in the wrong section, maybe he should still get help or an answer even though he placed it in the wrong section.
What are you a moderator or a wanna be one?

How about the fact that I respect the forum and its rules. If this post was made in the right section of the forum, it would get the answer faster and more accurate. By having these threads sitting around the wrong forum, it clogs up the forum and make it harder for other posts that are worthy reading to be read.

Respect the forum? I guess you never made a mistake before.
Why dont you let the Moderators do their job and move it if they feel necessary instead of people like you clogging up the forum with unwanted nags and complaining.
Thanks.

Alright kids, I'll do OP a favor and "correctly" answer the question.

Obviously OP is concern about ultrasn0w, which is related to unlocking the phone, NOT jailbreaking alone.

OP, as of today, ultrasn0w works with the latest baseband released by Apple on 2G and 3G, so you are free to upgrade via iTunes. 3G S is not available for jailbreak or unlock as of yet.

See, posting here is pointless. You get the wrong answers from trolls like the two above.

Finally you posted some valuable info instead of all your bitching about wrong section wrong section.
You're the troll

Way to walk a fine line! Because baseband updates is general iphone stuff that people that don't jailbreak/unlock ask about all day long.

lol at this thread but i just had to post since I wasted my team reading anyway. The OP question was answered by the 1st reply and you guys just had an e-fight (I guess?) like little girls. All of you are on ignore except for the OP and 1 reply. Fail thread.

it's me the thread stater.

to start off, i don't even own a iphone. this topic was purely for me to gather knowledge. i wanted to know about baseband updates, that's all.

Obviously OP is concern about ultrasn0w...

CocoaPuffs,i don't know how or why you thought it was about preventing baseband updates.... I'm guessing, from your usage of the word 'obviously,' you have assumed it...it's not.

and with all due respect, your answer wasn't what i needed, that was for a question that you assumed i had.

the answer i was looking for was on the second post by jav6454.

and if no one minds,i'd like to stop the bickering and get back to the topic.

if i've offended anyone,sorry.

thanks, answered all my doubts.

OFFTOPIC: actually i want to discuss more on basebands. but the thing is, when we talk about basebands,i'm pretty sure we will, at the very least, mention jailbreaking too. since some are agitated at the moment,i'll reserve my questions and opinions as of now.It could be that i posted the thread in the wrong section, as a matter of fact,i only signed up today and this thread was my first post.
nevermind,i'll double check with the mods whether it should be moved first.
