There's a domain that I've been waiting for years to expire, and it will next month. Actually, it's my real name, and the guy that owns it never did anything with it for the 6 years he had it. It's also his name, too.

Anyway, I never sniped before. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not as easy as it seems. This is what will happen:

1. It will expire. Unless he has a HORRIBLE domain host, he can still get it, can't remember the window. Godaddy generally gives me 3 weeks after it "expired" to get it back at normal fee.
2. Once this window passes it enters this "dark place" this is where the domain is "lost" to you but no one else can get it either. I once had a domain enter this place and called godaddy and they said for like $1XX they can retrieve it from this "dark place" or I can wait for it to really expire and then it goes back to the public.

3.After 90 or so days in the dark place (at least with godaddy) it becomes public. That's where i rebought back a domain I had forgotten about.

Here's a bit more information....

I heard a rumour once that they were gonna try to pass some law to stop people holding onto names for the sheer hell of it, at least in England. When I first wanted to register my domain name the .com was available. It was a joint thing with some mates so it wasn't bought immediately. After all agreeing to do it the .com was gone...some domain company bought it up. I'm sure that people are out there watching these searches and flagging interesting names and taking them (at least back then). It's been four years and the price on it is still stupidly high, I don't need it....but I want it.....

Anyway...sorry for going off on a bit of a tangent....I hope you get your domain!

Thanks y'all. Do I need to pay a sniping company or can I just buy it like a normal domain registration?

are you sure he never did anything with it ?
A couple of years ago I registered the domain with my name and the only thing I do with it is forward to my business domain and add a an email adress to the domain, it's just cool to have an emailadress that goes like me@myfullname... I even got my iPod engraved with it just in case I loose it or it gets stolen.

I don't know if he's using it for e-mail, but I aims to use it for a website. Anyway, if I do get it it's not like I would feel bad about it. He would get a long period of time to decide. Actually, it does show that he re-upped it once, so he's likely to do it again. But if he doesn't...:D

www.snapnames.com - They'll buy it for you the second it becomes available. I have a few back-ordered here. In order to compete with the bots and scripts that pick up already used names, you have to play ball and just not "hope" someone does it buy.

Is that the best website to use? I'll bookmark it. Thanks.
