Any AT&T/Cing Veterans? I have a voice mail question.

My mom had Cingular about 5 years ago. At that time she could not get voice mail by pressing the voicemail button on her phone when she was outside her billing address state. To get voicemail she had to dial a separate number (don't recall if it was local or 800)., enter her password, and then get messages.

I've been w/ Sprint for 7 years and voicemail works the same anywhere in the country.

So my question is: is AT&T's email still the same awkward system or is it like Sprints where it just works where ever you go in the US?

Cingular changed that around the same time they killed off local / regional plans.

1st: It has visual voicemail so you don't have to worry about checking voicemail.

2nd: ATT/cingular phones come with the voicemail pre-programmed. The iPhone plan has nationwide minutes, so you really don't have to worry about the number it dials wherever in the continental US you happen to be while u have service. The number is local and is assigned according to where you are in terms of area code.

Yeah, you really didn't understand my question. Twinkie answered it, but what I was getting at is that a few years ago Cingular voicemail only worked when you were in your billing address state. If you lived in GA and drove off to FL for vacation you could not get your voicemail unless you called it in. So under the old system you could have visual voicemail on the iPhone, but it would not work when you went out of town.

Well, how else would you get your voicemail without calling it? I've had ATT for about 6 years and I've had to call it whether I was here or in NY or in TX... Guess I was confused.

Yeah, I'm talking about Cingular long before ATT had an ownership interest in it. If you were out of town you had to dial a special phone number and enter your password to get your email. You couldn't just press the voicemail button on your phone and get your voicemail. Very archaic system, which I'm glad they don't use now.
