Any benefit to running Snow Leopard Server?

Hey there...

I have a mac mini that servers up all the music/photos for all other macs (three others in the house). It also servers as the time machine host and I have two FW 800 drives sit off it to do replication/backups.

Would there be any benefit to move the mini to snow leopard server? If so, what would the benefits be?

For one, you could have one centralized account for each person, that you could use on all your Macs, as opposed to having accounts for each person, on each computer. So when you go to a different computer, all the files in your home folder are there (which include your iTunes, iPhoto, etc).

If you have 500 bucks, some time, and a genuine need/want for it, be my guest. But honestly, it's not for everyone.

I've got a Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server acting as a server in my home which has six other Macs and a Windows PC. I will say that if all you want to do is share files, save the $500. The mini + server combo is a great price for a server, you would need to be prepared to spend days studying the operation and setting it up to get full benefit of its capabilities. "It just works" cannot be said for Apple's server product!

Definitely read the features guide. It's also an email server, iCal server [sharing Calendars, etc.], Podcast Server, Address book svr, Wiki/Web, and iChat. Plus all the sharing, and things.

I'd think that's a bit overkill for a house, but if you have $500 to burn, and want to learn it, why not.
