I have a late 2012 iMac, of which it’s internal HHD just died and 650+gigs were deleted somehow. Now I am running everything of a bootable external SSD, have the internal HD still inside the iMac and am now looking into how to recover my data.
After reading about this for a few days, I understood that the most important thing is to not have any file being overwritten. Assuming I don’t manually drag any file to the HD, can this somehow happen? given I’m running everything of a bootable external SSD, could some log files or whatever still be created or am I safe when it comes to this?
In terms of actual software, I’ve come to the conclusion that looking for anything free is basically useless and the best option is to let most good software out there do a scan and based on the results/what shows the most retrievable data would be what I’d end up paying for. Is this the best approach? Can multiple scans, or having multiple software installed somehow mess with things? i’m thinking of the most recommended (disk drill, easeUS, disk warrior, etc).
Lastly, is time a factor? Or, as long as the drive remains unchanged, is there no difference in me retrieving my data tomorrow or next month? Honestly knowing this would calm me down a lot, for budget reasons.
Anything I have not brought up that should be kept in mind, or any recommendations?
I really appreciate any feedback
