You should add a running total to your site - so whats the official count at?

oh gosh, i'm sorry, that's not my site. sorry if it sounded like i was saying that.
but never-the-less it's a great site and it would be nice if they had a counter.
i was tempted to copy and paste them all into microsoft word and have it count, but i'm toooooo lazy. lol

chase :apple:

ozodesign started that site. Hey ozodesign if you are around you should add a counter! That would be awesome!

They sure are adding alot. Most importantly, whenever my wife and I go to rent something we always find like 3 we want to watch and have to debate on which one. We have gotten into some heated discussions. Hey just like the REAL video rental store experience.

I just did a quick count of the HD movies on the list above and there are currently 103 HD listed (assuming the list is correct). Supposed to be 100 by the first :) So Apple has achieved their HD goal 2 days early (no titles added today yet).

345 total titles are listed on the above sites all movies page (this list is only updated once a week per the page - so it is incomplete being updates last week - also this is assuming no duplicates in the listings by genera).

Unless there is a huge update tomorrow it doesn't look like they are going to hit their target which is a little dissappointing, have to think they should have been able to know if it was feasible before advertising it. I do think they are doing a pretty good job of adding movies but at this rate it will take a very long time to get to a mature selection. I was kind of hoping Apple would surprise us all and do a much better job than most of these other services have done, but while they are doing ok they need to pick it up (i know they might not be the bottle neck but that doesn't make it any better.

Also, i am very surprised that they are not properly maintaining the categories, very shocking for such an anal UI company. I just checked the 'all movies' genre and it has 351, a drop fewer than it had last week! And the HD and other lists are not very accurate, how hard could it be to maintain it.

I love the apple tv and have all my movies on it, and i love the interface, but i am really banking on them getting a broad selection and keeping up with all significant releases (with the 30 day delay). Let's hope.

I just did a search by rating on movies on iTunes and came up with 739 total movies that have a rating (G, PG, PG-13 and R). Which leaves 261 more to reach the goal - although 739 is not a correct number either because of unrated older movies. So Im guessing its close to 750 movies at this moment.

Edit to note that the 739 are all movies that are available to rent or buy - only about 350 are available to rent.

I actually watched the keynote again... and felt it was ambiguous whether the
1000 movies promise was for rentals only or a mix. No clue how they are
counting the Short Films either. AND there are movies that are HD only, making
counting just a little bit tougher (these only show up on the Apple TV itself).

I guess I'm pleased with > 100 HD movies...

Netflix boasts 90,000 "titles" -- thats an impressive lead. I guess if they continue
to add the current releases... it will eventually match your local Blockbuster.
How many titles can they carry at once... a few thousand?

Now did he actually promise 1000, or just say "we're going to have 1000 titles available"? I think there's a difference.

Apple Premieres iTunes Movie Rentals With All Major Film Studios

New Apple TV Software Lets You Rent Movies Directly from Your Widescreen TV

MACWORLD SAN FRANCISCO—January 15, 2008—Apple® today announced iTunes® Movie Rentals featuring movies from all the major movie studios including 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Lionsgate and New Line Cinema. Users can rent movies for as low as $2.99 and watch them on their Macs or PCs, all current generation iPods*, iPhone™ and Apple TV®. iTunes Movie Rentals launches today and will offer over 1,000 titles by the end of February, including over 100 titles in stunning high definition video with 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound which users can rent directly from their widescreen TV using Apple TV. iTunes Movie Rentals are priced at $2.99 for library titles and $3.99 for new releases, and high definition versions are just one dollar more with library titles at $3.99 and new releases at $4.99.

If you launch iTunes and go to the movies area, you can do a power search for only movies that are available as rentals. When I do this, I get a total of 399 movies that can be rented. That's not even close to the promised 1000.

Interesting - I just ran the query and it's showing 406 now... I guess they are constantly adding.

I'm also guessing Mr. Jobs is thankful it's a leapyear - maybe they'll manage to get 600 loaded by midnight tomorrow!:D
