Im on El Capitan.
In Safari, the google search works very slow and when I try to open a new tab also, it takes some time.

Is it a safari bug ?

Macbook pro cannot be at fault, as it is 16Gb RAM and not even 5% usage.

What could it be ?

Check with activity monitor app to see if it's the hard drive, memory or cpu that is having issues.

Do you have any extensions installed on Safari? Just as a test, does Chrome give you the same type of delays?

Is your Internet going over a VPN etc? Perhaps try using Google's public DNS service in case your ISP has issues resolving domains?

Just throwing a few things out there to see if you can narrow it down.

Activity monitor is fine. Google in chrome works perfect. And it's the same with ISP DNS and Google DNS both
