Any chance for Blu-ray in future AppleTV?

What are the odds that a future update to AppleTV with be combined with an internal Blu-ray DVD player?

I really like the interface of AppleTV but, I want the ability to watch uncompressed Blu-ray videos on my brand new HDTV.

I don't really wanna buy both.

I doubt it. The whole point of iTunes and Apple TV is to not require any hardware media. We'll be lucky if we get Blu-ray in the computers.

I can see Apple putting BR in the Mac's but not the ATV. There are a lot of professional editors that use FCP with Mac Pro's that would love to burn BR discs, myself being one.

As far as an internal/external BD, I'll never say "never" when it comes to Apple, but if I were a betting man, I would give you 100 to 1 that it will never happen.

If you must have Blu-ray, I strongly recommend you look for a different solution.

I agree. Although nothing looks as good right now as a well produced 1080p Blu-Ray disk displayed on a 1080p HDTV, purely digital media look like they might be the wave of the future. One of the popular theories is that BD won’t make it because it will be swamped by digital media, delivered directly from servers to individual computers. It’s going to be interesting to see how all of this plays out.
 
Should I just not buy any HD player right now? I really wanna get HD movies onto my TV and I tried connecting my Mac Pro to my HDTV via HDMI but, that was not a big success because not only the sound was delayed but, if my TV got turned off or goes to sleep, my computer would freeze... I had to restart to get things back to normal again.

How big is your TV?

I'd say wait until Blu-ray Profile 2.0 players hit. This gives you the full meal deal with Internet access (BD-Live) and larger persistent storage.

Don't expect the Apple TV to support Blu-ray for years if at all. The two paradigms are almost diametrically opposed. Apple wants you to utilize iTunes downloads. Every Blu-ray discs you popped in (assuming they added a player) would be lost revenue for them.

Before downloads started gaining momentum, I would have said yes go ahead and buy the Blu-ray player... But now it's a tougher call to make. Clearly the quality is superior, but I liken the quality difference to Laser-disc over VHS. Definitely better, but by how much to the untrained eye? I'm a total PQ nut, and I can see the difference, but my wife doesn't put so much stock into it. She only cares about content, not quality. I'd say there's currently a 50/50 chance that Blu-ray suffers the same fate as Laser-disc... a format, for the most part, only adopted by early-adopters/videophiles. The recent Blu-ray player sales figures suggest we may already be experiencing a slowdown. Or it may mean people are still waiting for prices to fall. Only time will tell, unfortunately. But no matter the fate of Blu-ray, the fact remains it is the reigning king of picture quality. If you have the means and want an unrivaled home theater experience, go ahead and bite the bullet.

Edit: good point nuckinfutz... the 2.0 players are coming soon and should be less expensive, to boot.
 
I think I'm gonna get an AppleTV because it seems like the better deal right now. Besides, I can record HDTV with my EyeTV 250 Plus and then encode it for AppleTV and the AppleTV will most likely hold me over until Blu-ray prices drop enough to make owning both AppleTV and Blu-ray more affordable... hehe.
 
Would be cool if they made it a USB add-on.

I want to be able to play DVD's and BR-Disc movies on my TV without the need of yet another box.
 
What I want.

I have, and I really enjoy, my Apple TV ....

But I want more.

IMO,
... the apple TV should also have DVR functionality (TIVO - ish)
... I want a BlueRay drive, but recognize it may not be right for everyone, so how about the following. An external BlueRay drive which can be plugged into and recognized by the Apple TV. Having it as an external option, stack-able same form factor, would keep the price down for those not wanting to pay for a BlueRay drive.

Do this Apple and I'll get in line to replace my current Apple TV with a new one. Who's with me? :D
 
I think it would be really cool if my ATV had a blueray drive and a PVR.

It would also be really cool if it also came with a 70" plasma screen that you could hook straight up to it. Also if it came with a set of top end 7.1 speakers that connected directly into it, and also if it played games it would be pretty cool too. Maybe if it came bundled with a really top quality leather lounge suite as well. That would make my AV experience pretty much complete.

It would also be really cool if it cooked me dinner, took the rubbish out and fed my cat.

Those guys at Apple are clever people - surely these few small upgrades aren't too much to ask?

Exactly. Everyone wants apple to do everything, and it's far beyond the scope of possibility. I think the apple TV is great in the form that it's in now, and the only real change I think would be amazing is one that was rumored a while back, being the Apple TV built into an actual widescreen TV manufactured by Apple. That would be great. But I'm not holding my breath and won't be here on the forums complaining when it doesn't happen. :cool:
