I am going to be getting a MacBook after the WWDC, but I HATE the glossy screen. Any chance they will announce a matte screen option by then?

I think Apple's reasoning is that the glossy screen looks better but isn't as good for professional applications like graphics. Hence the default matte screen on the MBP and the glossy as the only option on the MB.

that's just stupid... they offer an option on the MBP, why not on the MB?

i dont think theyll actually ANNOUNCE anything, but we could always hope for a quiet introduction of an option right?:)

Have you actually seen the glossy screen in person? Everyone has their own preferences, but honestly, I thought the reflections and the glare would be much worse than they are (I switched from a PB to this MB) and most of the time I forget it's even a glossy at all. They're much better than the PC glossies.

But, anyways, no I don't think Apple will give MB buyers the option like they do for MBP buyers - just another little "extra" that separates the two.

agreed. IMO they're like 75% glossy, 25% matte.

I saw the glossy screen for the first time yesterday and I thought it was breathtaking. Definitely better than any pc laptop glossy screen. This thing is stunning. For looking at pictures and DVD's, it's awesome, but since I need to match the color from my display to my printer, the glossy screen won't work for me. I need to see the color saturation that my printer will have. If you aren't into high-quality photo color calibration, then the glossy screen is sexy.

I also agree with the above comment. If you need professional color calibration, you're going to have to go pro. Sowwy! :p

Agreed. It is definitely glossy, but having gone from an iBook to my new MacBook about 1.5 weeks ago, sometimes I do forget I'm on a glossy screen, except for when I look at the screen at a certain angle. Though I must admit I love this screen saver I downloaded from apple's downloads site... "lotsawater" and oh man, it looks so great and when that is on I can easily tell the screen is glossy and it looks AWESOME. When I get caught up in some work though, all I notice is a very nice bright clear crisp screen, and it is NOT overly shiny and glossy like some other glossy displays out there.

I think you need to give it a second look. :)

I've seen plenty of it, my friend has one and I've been looking at them at the Apple store. I just don't like them

After countless trips to the Apple Store every week, I definately like the MacBook/MacBook Pro screens a lot more than other laptops. For example, I compared the MacBook screen with my friend's Vaio and that thing was almost unusable outdoors. However, whenever I plan on getting a MacBook Pro, I'm probably going for the matte finish just because it looks more professional and is better for some things.

There are some things I don't like about them - like color accuracy and brightness when doing any graphics.. but my external monitor will be matte and accurate, so when I'm on the go, who cares.

But ah well, like I said everyone has their preferences. If you hate them as much as you say you do, I'd probably go for the MBP rather than hold your breath for a MB w/ matte finish, though.

As it was said on other threads, I'm not aware of any 13.3" matte screens in the market right now... so it may be an issue of not having a source supply. Though it can be contested that if they are able to get these screens (which are different to all other screens in the market) they could get matte ones. Maybe they are cheaper to manufacture, maybe their tests showed that the target audience of the MB prefers glossy... who knows?
I thought I was going to hate the gloss, but it's amazing.

It's the market. The MacBook is the low end line. It pays not to have options. The simpler the line-up the cheaper the costs. I have seen the screen and the glare does bother me enfough to not purchace a MB. Likely, if the requests are enfough, Apple will offer a smaller MBP. I really like the size of my 12" PB, but would rather not have a 15" notebook if I have the choice.

I suggest a protective film with a mate or luster surface , like the kind NuShield makes.

While this is certainly true, no one should really be using a laptop LCD as a final check (unless necessary) before going to press. They're just not quite up to par, even when properly calibrated. The macbook is a better buy anyway, plenty of extra cash for a nice LCD.

Everyone always says "have you even seen the MacBook's glossy screen."

Quit already. I've (we've) seen it and I hate it.

Are there any laptop displays that are supposed to accurately represent colors? Looking at the screen of my MBP the colors still change quite a lot when moving the position of my head or the angle of the display.

Im actually starting to like the glossy screen. Its colours are more vibrate and easy on the eyes, the matte screen colours are quite bland. Downsides though its a pain to clean and the glare.

Vibrant i think is the word that you are looking for and just dont touch the screen, it is a simple compromise to having to clean it.

The endless apple splurge session for kevin chan continues.
