I've just purchased an Apple TV. Before I open it, I started wondering if they might refresh the model line in January. All I've heard about are tablet rumors.

Should I open it or return it and wait?

I would say it seems unlikely.

If there was an Apple TV update imminent I would have thought there would be some sort of rumors by now(eg supply constraints, Apple buying parts, etc.).

Although who knows, maybe an Apple TV update might tie into the January announcement.

If you are unsure just wait until the January announcement.

God I hope so. I just picked up an Asus O!Play box to replace the AppleTV in my home theater. plays back 1080P beautifully, but the interface is crap and I'd love to go back to aTV, but it doesn't do 1080P, so that's a deal breaker for me at this point, at least in my home theater.

A) No, Apple has no reason to refresh the AppleTV right now as they see it as an option to play iTunes streamed video and music, and as Apple is not providing 1080p sources, they don't need to be able to play them.

B) If you do want to keep the Apple TV you should take a look at the XBMC forums and the possible soon to come joy from modding the Apple TV with the Broadcom chip in the mini pci-e slot making it very capable of 1080p goodness.

Good luck in your decision!

Wow - this would be a big development. That Broadcom HD chip is inexpensive, and you can pick up PCI-e boards with that chip for about $25-$30 on eBay.

Rumors a while back Apple was looking into the Atom chip.

I would imagine an update consisting of a "greener" AppleTV that takes less power, yet can play 1080p.

An Atom based AppleTV using the nVidia ION chipset would accomplish that...

There is always a chance of an update but I am with the crowd who says that it will not be updated anytime soon. Enjoy your ATV. I sure do mine.

ya, the great thing as well is that you could also replace the wifi pci-e in a g4 mac mini and use the broadcom crystal hd on that as well!

Now THAT sounds like a nice project. An HTPC made from inexpensive components. Please oh please let this come to pass!
