Or will I be waiting till Christmas and should just buy the macbook now. I think I've decided to forego the pro for law school as it's not that big of a difference...

i doubt it. its not across the whole MBP line yet either. and the MB is a consumer model. it'll be some time before we see them in the MB still, imo. especially considering the 'issues' they've had with the ones in the MBPs

Agreed although I woudn't be surpised to see LED's in the next revision of MB's. I'd wait until Leopard comes out and the MB go SR.

Apple promised that the entire transition would occur in about a year, several months ago... I would personally guess that there will be another release of something with a smaller screen in the near future, while Apple is dealing with the issues of getting LED on the big screens, but it's going to take some time, overall.

The consumer/pro thing... which I consider inane anyway, is one thing, but quite another thing is the tech / feasibility. The Macbook screen is more feasible than any other LCD in Apple's lineup right now, purely because it's the smallest LCD in Apple's lineup that does not already use LEDs.

Not exactly - Jobs mentioned in 2-4 months ago that the Apple was planning to introduce its first Macs with LED screens in 2007.

Here’s the official word:

To eliminate mercury in our displays, we need to transition [sic] from fluorescent lamps to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate the displays. Fortunately, all iPod displays already use LEDs for illumination, and therefore contain no mercury. We plan to introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007. Our ability to completely eliminate fluorescent lamps in all of our displays depends on how fast the LCD industry can transition to LED backlighting for larger displays.
Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of arsenic in all of its displays by the end of 2008.

There was another announcement (which preceeded the above, I think) where Apple said the roadmap for introducing LED screens across its product range would hopefully be announced and hopefully completed by the end of 2008 - it did point out that with regards to its 17" MBPs, its going to be totally dependent on its suppliers to get this done, so wouldn't commit to a firm timeline.

Apple still has problems getting all the LED screens that they need for the MacBook Pro. Production is just starting to ramp up. Even if Apple started selling MacBooks with LED screens now, they would just have fewer screens for the MacBook Pro left. I wouldn't wait for it because nobody knows when it will arrive. And the LED screen is not so important that I would wait for it anyway.

dang

man...I've been waiting patiently for my new Macbook Pro 2.2 for a month now and I'm getting almost scared to open it when I finally receive it...

Thanks for the clarification. :) In any event, the whole roadmap is going to take a while. Particularly LED-backlit ACD 30"!
Yeah, I rather thought the 17" MBPs is the least of Apple's worries!

I meant to say in my previous post after "across its product range would hopefully be announced" by the end of 2007.

I also meant to say (curse my short term memory) I think the way this has been phrased in reports, made it easy to infer that that Apple was going to finish this roadmap in that time, rather than finalising it.

Also forget to mention (!), that in the not too distant future, it was rumoured that Apple had ordered a load of 13" LED screen - I think people concluded first it was for the MB, then for a new ultraportable machine - so I think that the MBs will have it next is a definite possibilty...

My prediction is around November. The rumor a while ago said that Apple had ordered 15.4'' LED-backlit LCDs for a q2 rollout (which came true with the MBP in June) and 13.3'' for Q3.

The MB was introduced in May 06, updated in Nov 06, and then in May 07. In keeping with this cycle and the rumor of 13.3'' LEDs being delivered around this time, the Macbook is most likely to get LEDs.

To the poster who said they won't get it until the 17'' MBP gets it, I doubt that. If you read the "A Greener Apple" article, you'll see that they said they will transition to LED-backlighting when it becomes practical for the particular displays. 13.3'' LED-backlit LCDs are cheaper and easier to get than 17'' (otherwise the 17'' would already have them). Therefore, it will probably get them first. It doesn't matter if it's a consumer or professional machine.
