like $500 instead of $600

or maybe offer one with a smaller drive for less money
like they do with ipads & iphones

one of the best ways to save a few bucks is wait until the refurbished units show up on the apple store. they are as good as new.
i even waited until they showed up on cowboom. $399 after 6 months.

In Europe, it's probably gonna be at least 100€ more expensive 'cos of their weird price calculations recently ... In the US, I don't believe they will make them cheaper. While there are much more powerful computers out there for 600, the Mini uses all Notebook parts which are still more expensive than their desktop counterparts. For example, the CPUs Apple usually uses in their base Mac Minis cost about 229 USD from Intel.

I don't know if the standard config will be cheaper, but I sure hope the SSD upgrade will. Right now the price is just insane...

Yeah the SSD upgrade should fall in price and possibly they might use a little faster SSDs too. They should start offering a 16GB (2x8GB) RAM upgrade. The prices have fallen sufficiently now that they should be able to offer that.

Guess it will be the same.
On one side, they will be cheaper off, as they dump the Radeon, the HD and a couple of cubic inches of aluminium, on the other hand, it will be soldered SSD by default, and 128Gb of that is still more expensive than a 500Gb HD, and it sells better, so they will keep it at 599 I guess.

And you thought Apple pays that? :D
Have a look at Wikipedia listings with processors. For each mobile processor, there is a desktop equivalent with the same speed, the same die size etc, but costing less than half. You can read that, Apple knows it, so they pay desktop prizes. Don't worry.

First off, there are a few key differences between mobile and desktop chips. For example, power usage and power (yeah, the desktop equivalents are faster). And yeah, if you buy millions, you pay much less - but even then, they use the regular price (per 1000 pieces) to argue their resell price is right, so no reason for them to stop ripping us ...

According to Apples currency conversion this year, it will be much more expensive in Europe. Although it doesn't seem to be as bad with Macs as with iPhones and iPods.

I guess...

My educated guess is the price depends in the components: SSD over HDD, discrete graphics over shared one, type of ports (Thunderbolt over Firewire) and so on....:apple:

Of course I can only speak for the euro zone, but aren't Apple products more expensive in the UK too?

Yes. Here's a simple comparison for a few Apple products.

All prices below are in USD. US prices are often shown without sales tax, whereas in the UK and Europe they're included in the shown price.

I've shown UK prices, and I'm basing the EU prices on Germany. The UK has a 20% sales tax (VAT) and Germany has 19% (Mehrwertsteuer).

Mac mini:
$599 US
$705 UK excluding tax
$846 UK with tax
$645 EU excluding tax
$779 EU including tax

Apple TV:
$99 US
$131 UK excluding tax
$158 UK with tax
$119 EU excuding tax
$142 EU with tax

iPod nano:
$149 US
$171 UK excluding tax
$206 UK with tax
$184 EU excluding tax
$220 EU with tax

MacBook Pro with Retina Display:
$2199 US
$2399 UK excluding tax
$2879 UK with tax
$2494 EU excluding tax
$2969 EU with tax

Base MacBook Air:
$999 US
$1132 UK excluding tax
$1359 UK with tax
$1147 EU excluding tax
$1366 EU with tax

16GB 'The new iPad' 3G:
$629 US
$664 UK excluding tax

I actually bought a Applestore US refurb AppleTV 2, had it delivered to my virtual US address - bundlebox or something like that, then shipped it to EU, paid all taxes (including 21%VAT) and I profited by getting it cheaper than from the Applestore EU. I got Amazon to throw-in a US refurb Kindle and I think I saved around $30 on the total deal, but I had much more fun and proved it could be done!

I don't know that I'd try this with a 27" iMac from US refurb, but MacMini might work out cheaper! Globalisation can sometimes work out for the rest of us...

Prices in the US are shown without sales tax because sales tax isn't a federal thing here. Many people just make big purchases in tax free states where it makes financial sense. Delaware is the most prominent.

If you wanted to, I think you could make a $499 Mini using a core i3-3110M. It's still two cores, four threads. It still can handle 32 GB of RAM and has Intel HD 4000 graphics.
