Why does MBA need more powerful processors than MBP?

Answer is not just no, but hell no.

It is not so much the more powerful processing of IvyBridge but the DX11 integrated graphics that looks awesome.

If MBA goes SB (and I'm sure it will as well) I think I would rather have a cheaper referb or used c2d with m320.

The m320 on windows boot camp is doing better than the hd3000 anyway and I will not be doing anything on a MBA that will tap a c2d.

But if the next MBA were IB I would buy it new in a heart beat.

Here we go again about GPU/CPU.

Wait for 2012 then. MBA will go IVy bridge. If not, 2013 by the latest. No wait. Then there might be a redesign of MBA because apple tends to redesign MBA every 3-4 years. Wait until 2014.

No, probably a dual core Sandy Bridge or something like that. Quad core is too much for these laptops and I believe that Ivy Bridge will be exclusively quad core and up.

Yea i would say no chance of IB until at least revision F(50%), if not more likely in my mind rev G(90%).

I don't know that it's impossible, and I am all for keeping C2D for a 2011 update. I know everyone wants SB but the graphics forced with it are crap. I don't think Apple would use C2D again, as it has for four straight MBA versions and C2D is soon to be done.

Given that there have been so many C2D MBAs it seems obvious that Apple would use Sandy Bridge next rather than jumping it for Ivy Bridge. I think it is a possibility that the use of Intel's HD3000 in SB 13" MBPs could really show us all the truth about how inferior it is to even prior gen Nividia 320m and even nearly 2.5 year old 9400m.

I think there will be a lot of backlash and problems when 13" MBP buyers experience the truth of the Intel IGP. It has caused Apple problems before, and it was the root cause of the original MBA. When considering why the rev B MBA was so great it all came down to 5X graphics performance in the Nvidia 9400m.

I also think that perhaps Apple could have gotten away with SB in the MB, MBA, and Mm, but in a "Pro" Mac? It really could lead to Apple skipping SB and holding updates for the MBA until Ivy Bridge and further improved IGP.

I personally am hopeful for an AMD CPU/GPU combo or a move to an AMD discrete GPU in the MBA. ivy Bridge along with a low voltage AMD GPU could bring the MBA to legendary status.

There is hope, but it means not getting a 2011 update or a longshot separate track from MBP. MBA faithful have waited years before for updates, but the MBA is now too popular.

I don't want SB in 2011 unless it could come with an AMD discrete GPU. It appears from the 13" MBP that Apple isn't going with AMD CPU GPU combos too, but I am still hopeful the MBA takes a different track.

All I really want in 2011 is the same CPU GPU combo, backlit keyboard, Thunderbolt, IPS display, and USB 3.0. But I know this isn't happening and it's all nothing more than a dream.

Ivy Bridge will be more powerful, but it also has built in GPU. The big thing that I see is that it is suppose to use 50% less power than the current 32nm processors.

LOL very beyond wishful thinking..

It took Apple a few months after the Sandybridge CPUs were available on the market before implementing them into a MBP refresh, so I don't see Apple getting their hands on IvyBridge CPUs half a year before they're available.

I'm wondering the same thing myself. Not to mention battery life considerations, maximizing profit, and having a reason to push people who are not completely sold on the air's size and form factor onto the 13" MBP's in addition to heat.

But...it seems the charts and graphs being thrown around in the continuing 320M vs. HD3000 brouhaha seem to show the latter being matched to a i5 or i7 chip. Would the graphics performance be diminished if it were mated to a slower, less powerful CPU?

I don't see how the next MBA won't have Ivy Bridge unless Ivy gets released late. Ivy Bridge is supposed to bring battery life up a lot more than just a nm shrink because of the 3D transistors.

The low power Sandy Bridge in the refreshed MBA are brand new.

Yes, but what I'm saying is that Intel always released their full sized Desktop versions of their CPU's first; before releasing any mobile versions.

Therefore I don't see Apple getting a mobile IvyBridge CPU half a year before the full sized desktop CPUs are out.
