I've been planning on picking up either a 17" iMac or 2Ghz white MB for a while now, as each cost $1300. I've been saving for a while, and each time I get close, something has come up that prevents me from making the purchase. Well, I've recently saved the money for either one of these computers.

However, my dream computer would be a MBP, but its always been quite a bit out of my price range. While looking around, I noticed a 1.83Ghz MBP is available at amazon.com for $1800 w/o tax and before $150 rebate. This would be the ONLY way I could afford a MBP, and even then, its pushing it.

I was wondering though, if there is any chance that when the Core 2 Duo Macs hit, the base model might be cheaper than $2000? I know it sounds funny, but in the electronics/computer industry, it happens a lot. What do you guys think?

They probably keep the price and update the product once in a while.

Nah, probably not for awhile. There's really no reason for Apple to do it at the mo.

I mean, my dream would be a 13.3" MacBook Pro, but that doesn't seem to be coming out anytime soon, but I do have a 1.83GHz White MB, and it's so fast that it doesn't matter. ;) It'll be even faster with a total of 1.5 GB of RAM, which should be coming.

And if you need to, you're better off getting the "slower" MB and more RAM rather than the faster MB with only 512MB of RAM or 1GB. I do play with photos a lot, though.

I doubt we'll see a price drop. There's an outside chance that we'll see a speed bump to 2.33 GHz ( Core Duo T2700 )

Well you're fresh out of luck then. The family is complete now, remember?

lol, who said a newborn can't come along?

this is APPLE we are talking about here!

I for one think there may be a chance for a price drop on the MBP's in the near future, perhaps at WWDC.

Yeah, a 13.3" MBPro is my dream computer. If they threw a core 2 duo and an X1600 card in an aluminum case for about $1600, I'd be all over that.

I asked the buyer at our school bookstore about a price drop on the 1.83GHz MBPs left in their inventory. She said if they're still around by then, she'd consider dropping them to a $1299-$1349 range. I'm planning on waiting and picking one up with the $179 off a 30gb iPod.

I don't know about price drops for new MBPs, but I doubt it. Your best bet is price drops on older revisions if something new is shown at WWDC.

No. Look at Apple's past when it comes to dropping prices- refurb prices will drop tons but new computers or anything else rarely experience price drops. It's not the way Apple seems to do things.
