I was one of the first people in line to pick up my 3G 1 when it released last April. A really big draw for me was the unlimited option, which was quickly phased out by the powers that be at AT&T (anyone still grandfathered?)

As money hungry as they are, do you think AT&T or Verizon (or someone else?) will offer this option for the this year's rendition?

I don't really need it, but I'd much rather have it than not.

What say you?

I doubt it. Both of those carriers are probably wondering how they'll handle their increasing data loads as-is. Verizon has said that they will switch to tiered data this summer, just like AT&T did.

Will those of us who currently have a 1st gen iPad with unlimited data be able to swap the SIM card with the iPad 2 and continue our unlimited plan? Or will we lose the unlimited data by upgrading to the iPad 2?

That's what makes life so exciting, the future is unpredictable.

you probably will be able to, but we wont know anything for sure until it is actually released.

Verizons already saying that they'll be moving towards a tiered internet plan by summertime so I really dont think that data access is moving in the direction of the consumer.

Personally, I would like to see data get charged per customer rather than per device. My idea is that you would buy 2GB of data from ATT and you can access that bucket with your iPhone, iPad, Computer etc. This works out for the carriers also because if you go over 2GB then you pay them extra anyway so they'd probably still make money on data overage.

I'd add that if they wanted to be really fair when you buy the data it wouldn't expire. If I could pay $50 and get 10gb of data and use it on any device until it's used up I'd want everything I own that's small enough to carry to have 3g.

Or how about rollover data like ATT does with rollover minutes.

don't think so but i'd like to see more data bucket options... like $10 1 gig, $20 2 gig, $30 3 gig and when you go over they charge you for an additional gig. you could just stay at the 1 gig and when you used more it's just another 10 bucks. you win, they get to repeatedly charge you and profit, win-almost-win

The trend is definitely going in a different direction, but if the new iPad supports both AT&T and Verizon, you'd think one of them would offer at least a temporary unlimited plan as another way to set themselves apart from each other.
