Any CURRENT way to upgrade OS on unsupported mac

I just bought a 2007 mac pro on ebay, not knowing the hardware was unsupported.

Needless to say, I can barely install anything.

I've watched a few videos and read a little, but everything I'm finding suggests installing something (like Parallels). Well, the problem is...I can't even install Parallels! I get the error "You have Mac*OS*X 10.6.8. The application requires Mac*OS*X 10.7 or later."

Fantastic!

Is there anything I can do other than throw this glorified web browser in the dumpster?
 
You could start by upgrading to 10.7, as yours will support Lion.
Someone else will add in about upgrading beyond Lion. You can search on these forums for upgrading MacPro to 10.8 and higher. You will need to upgrade your graphics card, and there's a simple tweak to the installer to go for newer "unpsupported" OS X versions.

^^^^Again, you can update your machine with the latest release of Lion, 10.7.5. Many threads here will tell you how to do that.

It's a bit goofy, as you have to buy Lion from the Apple online store via the web, not the Mac app store. I guess it is to stop people who really want Yosemite instead.

Once you get the link, you use the Mac App Store to redeem the code you purchased, so you can download Lion (it will be tied to the apple id you use in the mac app store if you need it again later.) Run the app to upgrade to Lion.

Let me ask an opinion (that I know the answer to). Should I just return this computer (I have 30 days, no questions asked) and get a later version and spend a little more money?
 
I like the integration of Yosemite and iOS 8, and the while the hacks people do to get Yosemite running on unsupported hardware are nice, I just want things to work without worry.

Of course, I don't know how much you paid, or what you do with your computer that needs or doesn't need to run current software. If you are just using this as a test to see if you like OS X instead of windows, and it was a cheap find, then it might be worth keeping.

There have been a lot of upgrades in computer tech since 2007, and it is 8 year old unsupported hardware now.

I knew I should have given some detail!

I paid $400, MacPro 2,1 - 8 core, 3ghz, 8gb ram

I've used mac over windows for the past 3 years and don't plan to switch back. I DO use Microsoft office and have some pretty heavy excel files that can bog down some systems, and I multitask like it's nobodies business! My fiancé uses photoshop in her photography biz.

Those are my uses. In a perfect world I'd go buy a brand new Mac and call it a day, but I'm just trying to get the most value for my buck...so forgive the noob question :)
 
Yes, I'd return it and get at least a 4,1 (2009) Single CPU Mac Pro. Those are far easier to CPU Update than the 2009 Dual CPU Model. For what you do, a Single CPU will be just fine.
