Are there any real-world differences in say... 8 of the 4 GIG chips...versus 4 of the 8 GIG Chips...in MacPros 2009 and later?

Obviously the price per gig is not as good...but I'm talking about performance, known gotchas...that kind of thing.

Just looking for some re-assurance here. Sometimes there are peculiar things that show up with certain pairings, slots, etc.

Usually having more chips will show some speed improvements, so in this case the 8 4 gig chips would be slightly faster.

Makes it harder to upgrade in the future, though.

Nothing of significance. 8GB DIMMs are almost certainly going to be registered memory rather than unbuffered which is less than 1% slower when you use less than 4 per CPU and 8% or so faster when you have 4 per CPU, but you can get 4GB registered DIMMs too. You won't notice this in real world performance.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to get 48 GIGs--6 of the 8. After Effects wants 2-3 Gig of RAM per CPU/Thread, plus lots of overhead...and that's my every-day application.

Any parting thoughts about using 6 of 8 slots...with 8?
