Somewhat new here and just would like direction on new video card since with pricing sailing high I don't want to make a mistake and lose money.

5,1 currently have 10.13.6 but looking for metal card to upgrade to the latest big sur like my other system are on in the house. Use this Mac Pro for iMovie editing for family vids.

Not really. But I prefer the Gigabyte Aorus premium brand.

However, now is not the time to be buying any GPU. The miners have drained the market and all the cards are so rare the prices have shot up and are usurious. I'm in the marker for an RX6800XT and will wait until the market settles down.

I bought an Aliexpress XFX RX580 8gb, supposedly used, but it come visually new

Dual bios, the card has all the characteristics of being or having been a miner.

I flashed it with Sapphire Pulse Mac edition rom

I could'n be more happy

Unfortunately I need it now since I cannot upgrade to newer macOS without and therefore cannot load VMWare Fusion and several other apps for work.

In the 580 lineup there are less differences compared to other series. They have dual fan coolers from the start, so custom brands are almost the same as well. However the size and power can be different. The Puls model has 8 pin with 6 pin power in a two slot design. The Nitro version has dual 8 pin and is 2,2 slot wide. There are also 4 Gig and 8 Gig models as well as 570 and 560 versions. They all should work. If you don’t have the pixlas powercable mod, the 8 pin & 6 pin version makes sense.

The Sapphire Pulse RX580 is a standard , and a very nice card.
Note that there is a newer version of this card , known for issues in the MP4,1/5,1
The version to avoid is easy to recognize : There's no DVI connector , only 4 DP/HDMI.

Very useful information, thank you!

I’m getting offers to trade my GeForce 1070Ti cards for 580 8GB. I’m assuming their cards were used for mining and now they want mine for ETH mining.
Should I avoid cards previously used for mining altogether or should I look out for signs or ask specific questions?

TIA

Don't know how 'mac tech experienced' you are....?
If you want either Catalina or Big Sur, there is a lot more involved than replacing the GPU.
As both OS's are not supported on cMP.

Stay well away from XFX brand.
RX580 Pulse for zero issues.

GENERALLY speaking, avoid the specific cards not "approved" on the Sonnet eGPU list for macOS:

Not all are guaranteed bootable/compatible with MP5,1 but it is a good start. Double check cards for power constraints and physical size. Sapphire Pulse RX 580 was Apple's own recommendation. There are a few other specifics, but have not seen any of them in stock as new recently.

As mentioned above, prices are skyrocketing right now. Chip shortage compounding it. Have considered selling a lot of hardware to take advantage.

I’ve already upgraded BootRom and have 5,1 ready for metal supported video card. This is only thing I’m aware of holding me back as of now.

I’ve followed guides to this point. I’m fairly techy compared to avg joe.

So you have open core or dosdude patcher...?
Otherwise you cannot go beyond Mojave.
