I'm not a hardcore gamer at all, but I want to make sure the computer can still compete.

Right now I use a mac for work stuff, and then this laptop just for gaming. I currently have a ASUS ROG G751JL laptop that i'm using and performs great

Due to space, I need to consolidate these computers and so I'm in a market for a Mac Pro 6,1. Yes the 6,1 not 7,1. Due to space constraints.

Do you guys think the Mac Pro 6,1 can keep up with the ASUS for gaming or am I making a mistake trying to consolidate all these computers

Due to total inability to upgrade GPU, hardly.

You might try with eGPU, but since it is TB2 not 3, I wouldn't bet on it.

Trash can MP is just one of those Apple products that are best to forget they ever existed.

If i were you, I would assemble Hackintosh, buy 2018 Mac Mini, or try my luck with cMP. But, CPUs options in cMP have poor single core performance, which is gonna be constraint for many games.

A quick search shows that G751JL only has a GTX 965M 2GB, which is a very low end GPU for gaming.

If you go for the 6,1 with dual D700, which means you have dual 7970 6GB. I never actually deal with the 6,1, however, crossfire should able to work (may require work around).

So, if you have crossfire activated. Dual D700 will be about 200% faster than the 965M, you also has 200% more VRAM (despite that you actually have 12GB VRAM, but for crossfire, still only 6GB countable). I expect that will be more powerful that your gaming laptop.

However, I really couldn't understand why go for the 6,1. That's not super low cost choice, and lack of maintenance path.

If you want a small gaming computer, buy a Corsair One make much more sense.

Since you come from the G751JL, I expect "able to run macOS" isn't a big deal for you, or you know how to make it a Hackintosh etc.

macpro 6,1 is not an ideal option, to play new top games you may also need to add the cost of an eGPU.

also want to point out that there are now a lot of games on osx and steam is amazing, if you buy a windows game with a mac port on steam you get to play it both on windows and osx
but
for a lot of games you may just end up booting in to windows to play which can be a pain, if it's just games you may be better of with a windows box.

it is a lot better than it used to be but still not ideal to game on osx, light games or older games do run relay well tho.

relay depends on what you want.

I know its not ideal, but it is what it is, I have space constraints and have to figure out some kind of consolidated setup for my current setup. :(

Right now I use a mac for work stuff…

I'm curious what model Mac you use for work? If you must consolidate, it might be possible to just tweak the Mac that you have and still have something that performs acceptably for you.

an imac with an rx 480+ will be a faster game playing box and take less room than 6,1 + display

to be fair a 6,1 is a nice computer and with the option of an eGPU you can if needed use a newer GPU.

Well, thanks guys. After some long hard thinking, I decided to wait and get the new Mac Pro and figure out a way to get it to fit in my tight space. If it doesnt work out I have a feeling Apple will still have some of the old Mac Pros left over to sell

I’d suspect any 6,1 that Apple is selling is certainly built on demand. So there likely won’t be a lot on the clearance rack.
