My QNAP TR-004 keep ejecting HDD by itself and it does not run constantly instead of turn on and off. No matter what HDD brand I use, it still happening. Gosh, it's very unreliable to use especially since I transfer tons of file. How come QNAP TR-004 eject HDD? I got many error messages when it eject HDD by force. I already sent it to repair but nothing has been fixed so I assume that QNAP TR-004 itself might be the problem.

So I would like to ask for recommendations to replace QNAP TR-004 to 8 bay HDD storage. Any suggestions?

I would suggest a Promise Pegasus unit only because I still have the original R6 and they've supported 10 years worth of Software and Driver updates across all the latest Mac OS and Hardware, and continue to maintain support.

But there are more expensive 8-Bay units out there, I would go with Promise just cause its been bulletproof for me.

Edit: Whoops, you were looking for an 8 Bay unit, the Promise's only come in up to 6.
How much storage space do you require? And how much performance?

Are you on a M1 Mac? I had the same problem with my 2 bay USB OWC unit, switched to a thunderbolt one and the disk ejects went away.

Support for external raid (e.g. Pegasus R2 and G-Tech G-SPEED Shuttle XL TB3 here) seems to be getting increasingly difficult since Monterey - need for legacy software with warnings that this will not be supported in future and reduced security. Apple are really NOT catering for this market. I would be tempted to keep with NAS rather than direct attachment for future proofing.

I already have NAS alternative so a direct storage is the only option that I have. I have no idea whether Mac or QNAP is the problem.

I was using a OWC Gemini which worked ok but I am returning it because it does not keep the hard drives cool. My older OWC USB elite dual pro will eject the disk on my M1. I also have a thunderbolt 2 version of the same and it works fine. I also have 4 single usb enclosure from inteck that all work fine. I just ordered a Sabrent USB type-C dual and we will see how that works.

Did you ever fix this problem? I was thinkig of getting TR-004, albeit mostly for an Intel Macbook.

Nope, it turns out QNAP products aren't supported for Apple Silicon Mac. After I got OWC's Thunderbay 8, it never had any issues at all. Clearly QNAP's problem.
