I have recently acquired a mid-2012 Mac Pro that is not yet Metal-compatible and I wonder if anyone can recommend a graphics card please?

A card or cards that would not only be Metal-friendly, but might also be suitable for Rhino (3D), the intended principle use.

The machine in its current state is a 12-core with 40GB of memory; 2 x 3GB hard drives and the standard ATI Radeon HD5770 card. It's currently running High Sierra and of course it won't run Mojave without a non-Metal card.

I would like to run up to three 30" screens and version seven of Rhino that I have on another machine.

Grateful for any particular recommendations or general suggestions.

Thanks

I've got Rhino 7 license, but I've been using 5.x and 6.x mostly for now. I can't see that were is any significant changes in requirements, at least I haven't noticed any.
I have used Rhino with different cards in this particular order:

RX 580 (Sapphire Pulse) - easiest because there is no need for extra power besides the 2x mini 6-pins.
Vega 56 (PowerColor Red Dragon) - more power needed than 2x mini 6-pins, but gives you some more oomph.
Radeon VII (re. designs) - needs Pixlas mod or external power source. This is the fastest card you can get with the cMP.

If your 3x 30" screens would be with WQHD resolution (2560x1440), I believe you could go with any of those cards. At 4K it might become more problematic at least with RX 580.

edit. unfortunately any of those GPUs are priced like crazy at the moment. And only used ones are to be found easily.

Many thanks for prompt response. I believe the dependency chain runs: Rhino 7 requires Mojave (10.14) which in turn requires Metal capability. I will probably leave Rhino 8 (currently existing a WIP) for some time, as it will require 10.15. My screens are all older 30" of HP make, with the more modest resolution you mention. I will be looking for second hand cards that just fit the bill. Thanks again.

If you have not checked out the first post of this thread yet, I heartily recommend it. At the least, it will give you some fodder for asking more detailed questions for your use case.

Current sky-high GPU prices have complicated matters, but I hope this helps.

Many thanks for the link. This is going to require more thought, as I want to be able to boot from more than one tray and possibly to run Windows on one of the internal drives …
