I just realized that Apple will give me a $110 trade in on my ancient iPad Pro. If I take that off the price of a refurb 9 I can get a new tablet for a very reasonable sum. The Pro’s touchscreen is occasionally wonky so this is a good trade. I don’t need the screen size.

My need isn’t desperate. Should I wait for a 10 or is it not worth risking the trade in offer?

Thanks. I suffer from essential tremor so a pencil is more frustrating than helpful. As it will mostly be used for the web the screen will probably be fine given the price premium. I’ll visit an Apple Store to see.

10 refurbs won't show up until the next standard/entry-level iPad is released and even then it might not come for a good while after this if Apple ditch the iPad 9 and replace it with the 10 at a lower price point brand new.

Currently, I've not seen any iPad 2023/2024 rumours.

Shoot, I'm still waiting for 5th Generation iPad Air refurbs! They're wildly slow with these, it seems.

I think it's more like intentionally slow.

Apart from the iPad mini 6, Apple doesn't seem to want their latest gen iPads on the refurb store. They seem to want to wait until the next gen is announced/released before making iPads (and iPhones) available as refurbs.

They were always a year behind on iPhones. But, them being this behind on iPads seems relatively recent (circa Pandemic era). Certainly, they're nowhere near this bad with Macs.

As mentioned, the iPad Mini 6 is the only iPad I've seen show up during its current cycle. I suspect this is because they have had a lot of returns.....jelly anyone?!

Nah, it didn't start with the pandemic.

Iirc, the 1st gen iPad Pro wasn't available on the refurb store until the 2nd gen was released. I remember looking for deals on the 256GB LTE 12.9 1st gen but there were none to be had aside from those tied to 2 year carrier contracts. Same goes for 2nd gen iPP. Nothing on Apple certified refurb store until the 3rd gen was released.

During the lockdowns, it was way worse. They rarely stocked refurb 3rd gen iPPs and those would get snapped up in the blink of an eye on the extremely rare occasions that Apple restocked.

The Macs, they seem to have no problem selling the latest models as refurbs.

Part of it may be the source of refurbs - returns and trade-ins primarily. Until people have a compelling upgrade reason you're likely to see few if any refurbs available.

If the OP shops around, they’ll find the 10th generation iPad for $399. Amazon had it at $379 recently. I’m not sure how much cheaper a refurbished example will be.

Also, while the iPad 10 doesn’t seem to be on sale there right now, B&H has its own Apple product trade-in program. You might want to see what they will give for your old iPad Pro vs what Apple will give you.
