I have a new MBP, it is not even 2 days old. When I close the lid, the light on the latch does not dim or give the normal sleep indication.

I am led to believe that my MBP does not go into sleep mode. Further indications are, I have an external monitor, when I close the lid, the computer goes into single monitor mode. OK maybe it's supposed to do that, my PowerBook G4 didn't - but whatever! When I select the apple/sleep, my monitor blanks out and it looks like it's going to sleep but it wakes up again in no less than 5 seconds.

The only way I can seem to get my new computer to consume less than full power is to do a full shutdown.

Anyone else experience an issue like this?

Cheers,

Sean

Have you tried sleeping it from the Apple Menu, or pushing the power button once to bring up the dialog box?

When I want mine to sleep, I usually put it in front of a Bob Ross show. Puts it out like a light.

What USB devices do you have plugged in? Sometimes they can wake the machine. If you find it is a USB device, and it's plugged into an ACD, try plugging it directly into the MBP. I had the same problem, and it was something about using the device through the ACD's built-in hub.

I'm not sure what you mean "single-monitor" mode with the lid closed, as the internal display would be off anyway. I guess if the external was not the main display, it would become main when the lid was closed.

USB checking sounds like a good way to go, Bluetooth can also interfere.

If you can get it to sleep from the menu then, to me, it infers something is just waking it up immediately?

Otherwise, I don't know what Bob Ross is, but you could try getting antibact1 to tell it some jokes? :p

Thanks for the Bob Ross hint, never heard of it before but I suppose with a little research I can find a way to use it on my kid!

I shut off the bluetooth previously, but it turned out to be a USB thing.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers,

Sean

My MBP started doing this after a topcase replacement for a faulty trackpad. Apple techs speculated that it might be the logic board, but instead of repairing they swaped my machine for a new one in order to 'capture' my problematic MBP and run tests.

Few cases are identical, but your symptoms sound a lot like mine. I got to a point where I had ntohing plugged in, no apps running, clean OS install, and I still couldn't sleep the thing.

Check out the Apple Discussion forums for more details too since there was a lot of coverage of this issue recently:
