Price, specs matter. Especially with great cheap options like the Moto G5/G5+ or Honor 6X.

I'm extremely interested. But need to see specs and pricing, and will carriers be selling this phone ?

- Hope it runs stock or close to stock Android.
- Big battery of at least 3,600mAh size minimum.
- SD835 ?

The rumors I've read online suggest flagship specs and a bezel-less or close to bezel-less phone. I've also read it's gonna have a flagship price too.

Is this a branded phone, manufactured by a company like Sony or HTC behind the scenes ? Or a brand new startup ?

New startup, not android or iOS but another built in house off of Linux like android was

Wha? I thought the foundation was still Android? Possibly a forked version similiat to what Amazon uses.

I had no idea a third new smartphone OS was being introduced. I expected Android but a skinned UI, like Samsung, LG, HTC all have riding on top of Android base ?

Or is this a radical new Android fork ? More than just a skinned UI, but something based off new Linux and really a leap forward?

Well, it was all shown early this morning: https://www.essential.com/

Excellent looking specs. That build looks so nice too. Titanium frame with ceramic back. It's running what looks like a very pure version of Android. Though they also announced Ambient OS for their home device.

Worth reading Andy's post on his blog about why he started the company.

3,000mAh battery for a 5.7" phone. Why?

Ugh this was a great sounding phone until that. Meaning it will get battery life comparable to the regular S8 not + version, which is just ok battery, not great, not bad. Whereas the S8+ gets GREAT battery life thx to the 3,500mAh battery.

Why can't manufactures stuff in larger batteries ? IMO flashsip Android phones should ship with 3,500mAh size MINIMUM but I'd prefer 4,000mAh at the cost of a hair thicker phone.

I was expecting something revolutionary.

For that price, I'm not paying it to some unknown startup. That took courage.

This phone is the new Nextbit Robin. You can get that phone for $120 brand new on eBay now.

Except it'll only sell a few thousand units and the company will discontinue sales and support 18 months after it goes on sale, most likely.

Sadly you are correct, UNLESS it gets on carriers that will promote it and stock it, and sell on contract. But still keep it bloat free like the iPhone or Pixel on Verizon.

If this phone doesn't get on carriers, it's DOA. Most people aren't paying $750 out of pocket for a brand new startup companies smartphone, and the people that do are a very tiny % of the smartphone market.

But this summer I'd take the OnePlus 5 over this unknown Essential, but the OP5 that has almost identical hardware but also has a much larger battery, and will sell for substantially cheaper.

It's US-only so no dice for us lot in UK.

But still think it's looks interesting (as a starting point). Kinda like a Pixel with better design choices. There is definitely a market for someone like Essential to come in with fresh ideas. Titanium is cool, 100% pure Android, dual cameras, the pin connections etc etc.

But there's no headphone jack. And I'm sorry but that front-facing camera looks abysmal. Good luck to them, competition is always a good thing!

Unfortunately, unless it's more than "a starting point," it's nothing but a moot point and DOA.

Not really. It depends how much money they have to burn. Essential aren't expecting to sell millions and millions, they aren't even set up for that so this really does seem like a starting point.

You can't assume that until the phone is in the wild, being used. People assumed battery life on the S8+ would suck but it turns out the 835 along with whatever refinements Sammy made changed the tide. This phone looks like it won't have Sammy's bloat, and there's a good shot the software and hardware are optimized to be hand in glove.

I'm sure Rubin was glad to rid his beloved Android of the bloat.

I don't necessarily disagree with some of you regarding the phone's chances in the marketplace. We'll see. There isn't a ton that differentiates it. I'm fairly confident it will run like butter and be a beast but the public doesn't care about that stuff.

HOWEVER...I'm quite sure many were saying likewise about OP. Being that this seems aimed primarily at the States, I'm wondering if the play here isn't to create a US-centric OP.
[doublepost=1496153055][/doublepost]...And I reserved one in black.

It's a sickness. :O
