A turn based RPG with a linear storyline like FF? Vay comes close...

But I'd recommend the Zelda-like action of Zenonia over Vay, it's fun and a little more complex, with more choices to make...

+1 here for Zenonia.

So far I tried Vay and Chornicles of Inotia but Zenonia beats them in all aspects IMO

I got Vay thinking it would be similar to final fantasy, but it's been fairly disappointing and I've mostly given up on it.

But keep in mind Zenonia isn't a true FF-style RPG. It's an action-RPG, like the Diablo games. It plays like Zelda, but with earning experience and learning new skills. Vay is really the closest thing to Final Fantasy on the iPhone, too bad they re-translated it with a crappy "modernized" translation.

I guess I'm a minority, but I prefer turn based RPGs like the oldschool Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games. The iPhone is such a great platform to revive such games, it's a shame Vay is the only one available (that I know of).

I guess there's always emulators...

Zenonia by far. I loved the original FF games back in the day along with Zelda and I think this game hits the mark.

Elven Chronicles

Elven chronicles is the game to get if you are looking for a Final Fantasy style game on the iphone.

It uses the same turn based strategy system etc.

Enjoy!

It's not FF style exactly but I quite like Quest. I downloaded it awhile back and still enjoy playing it. It's a first person perspective rather than the "bird's eye" view of Vay and similar games. There's a very generous free version available if you want to test it out first.

With the popularity of the iPhone and iPod Touches, one would think Square Enix would want to get a piece of that action. How hard would it be for them to port over the old NES and SNES Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series? Is it a contractual/legal issue that keeps them from doing so?

I'd gladly fork out up to $15 for FF6 on this platform.
