Any New England (Boston area) peeps have an iphone??

1. how is the reception in the new england area.
2, i have verizon which consumer reports rates the highest in the area.
3. found out my penalty to drop verizon is not as steep as i thought and may take the plunge.

4. but it is very important i have great reception, because i'm a visiting nurse in the inner city of boston, and calling drs about my patients is critical, with my verizon is almost 100% drop free.

for me, reception is gang-bangers here in Boston, but you should actually call AT&T and determine what the drop areas might be relative to where you'll be working most. I'm sure they have coverage maps that could help you out. I had Sprint and there were areas where reception tied completely and reliably driving through side-streets in Jamaica Plain. However, now with AT&T I'm still trying to find problem spots. One note however, is that inside my grocery store, my iPhone was unable to sustain a phone call, which I never experienced with my other phone. I believe it has something to do with the type of antennae however, and not the carrier.

oh thanks that grocery store problem concerns me , because sometimes i have to pick up few things in a grocery store for my patients, and not being able to make a call could be a problem.

cingular has gotten much better over the years, but they still have some dead zones around me, out on rt 2 its a little sketchy, but closer to boston i've never had a problem. Their oldschool att wireless cdma network was far superior though (I miss those days), cingulars gsm network has more issues indoors. Take today for example, I went to eat at longhorn in leominster and i had 1 bar sometimes, othertimes nadda, no service

I have no problems in Allston.

You should be fine in Metro Boston. I wouldn't worry about reception unless you were going to Northern New England.

Hey, I moved into the boston/cambridge area a week before the iPhone got released. I picked up an iPhone at launch and can't complain about the reception. EDGE isn't fast but not slow either... I get about 150kbps here and the nationally reported avg is like 191...

But don't get one! I want to be special... and over the past week I went from feeling like the only one in Boston with one to feeling like a sheep following the iPhone craze! EVERYBODY has them now!

well don't want to get one if they don't have a proper case to house the mobile and and if AT&T doesn't have an insurance plan like verizon to replace the mobile if it breaks, lost or stolen and etc.
after all my mobile is important device being a nurse, and alike.
if iphone / AT&T is not up to that challenge then it is a useless piece of junk, my mobile devices are crucial to my line of work.

I picked up my iPhone at the Galleria in Boston, I drove 4 hours as I live in Bangor, Maine and we don't have a corporate AT&T or Apple store in Maine at all. I'm back in Bangor and have good service everywhere I've gone. I also had service all the way home up the interstate with only two spots that I had no reception which was right around Freeport, ME and again around Newport, ME. These two areas are common dead zones. I didn't have coverage there before on T-Mobile with my Blackberry Pearl.

They don't. There is no carrier-provided (or Apple-provided) insurance policy for the iPhone. There's a warranty if it's defective, but, if you break/lose it, you're out the money and need to buy a new one.

I live near boston and work in the city. I have great coverage - it's been comparable to verizon (my old provider) so far. As others have said, EDGE is slow but perfectly useable. I imagine it's the same everywhere.

I've yet to have a drop or lost call, but then again, I never did with Verizon either. On the whole, I have no concerns whatsoever about my choice to switch providers (even putting aside the iphone itself).

thanks all, glad the reception is so far great, as for the insurance deal , guess peeps are putting their iphones on their home owners insurance and next need to scope out a good and sturdy case for it
