Any news on handwriting recognition?

This is one of the missing items on the ipad, and the one app I am aware of (writepad) leaves a whole lot to be desired.

So, I was wondering if anyone had come across another solution for handwritting recognition.

It's hard to believe how the Newton had handwriting recognition that worked pretty well (eventually) way back when, and the ipad hasn't...

No news that I heard of. This issue was covered in some older threads here on MR. Apple could have easily enabled their Notes application with the handwriting technology from Newton, which actually worked quite well. Instead, the Notes app is as barebones as it can get. Pretty pathetic for them to actually ship something like that.

For some reason, there is a handwriting recognition feature for Chinese -- has been there since at least OS 2.0.

Personally, I'm not sure I'd use a handwriting feature for English even if there is one. Inputting English with the keyboard is accurate and fast, so any handwriting recognition will have to be as accurate as keyboard input or it's just a novelty feature that slows you down.

Yes it is pathetic as is, they should step up and put handwriting recognition in notes. No excuse when the tec is already there to not include it, sure typing is handy and fast, but a lot of times you need to just jot something down.

1. Stylus
2. Handwriting recognition as form of input.

Handwriting recognition is the dumbest use of processing power ever. Is there a slower method of input? And I certainly don't want a detachable stylus to keep track of. How would you use a stylus on a capacitive touchscreen anyway? Wouldn't dragging your hand across the screen along with the stylus just confuse the crap out of the touch sensors? Gotta slip on a special insulating glove to write? Glove stores in a pouch next to the stylus? Sorry, but this belongs on the retard's wish list with full desktop operating systems and flash.
