Any of you take your imac on the road?

...i mean, not to starbucks or the airport or anything, but to work or some other place you know you'll have a desktop/outlet?

seems to me it wouldn't be much trouble at all to break down as long as...

1. you had all your peripherals plugged into one hub(minimizing connections to unconnect)

2. you're using a BT mouse/keyboard

3. you were not at all worried about looking ghetto

9. and you had something like this

i'm just asking for those of us(probably just me ) who don't need FULL portability provided by a macbook/pro and require(or at least prefer) a larger and faster HD, a bigger screen, and as little cables as possible @ home for aesthetic purposes.

ofcourse, in utopia, i would get both a new "mid-july to late august" imac and a SR MBP so where ever i went my fps games would be there with me but....$$$ .....ya know?!

I've done it before, I needed to do a Keynote Presentation and I didn't want to trust exporting to powerpoint and using the provided comp (found out later that one wasn't even provided) cause that had screwed me before. Anyway I have a 17'' iMac G5 that a carried in a messenger bag upside down. I put it in upside down since that allowed me to put the flap under the stand and snap it together on each side. IT WAS HEAVY. iMacs look all svelte and everything but they are close to a desktop feeling when you haul them around. To minimize the extras I would have to bring I brought my PDA (sony clie UX-50) and had this program http://www.salling.com/Clicker/mac/ to control the presentation and system volume (esp awesome when i needed to change the volume wirelessly mid-presentation without interrupting the pres at all). It also works as an acceptable touchpad to control the mouse. If that hadn't of worked I would have brought my Wacom tablet because its shape is much easier to tote than a mouse/kybrd combo and with Inkwell you can write if you have to.

Its not ideal, but it worked and the presentation went off without a hitch. But as a note of caution, I carried my iMac around for probably a combined total of 30mins, and by then the stitching connecting the strap to messenger bag was audibly becoming undone



as a side note, I felt a little bad for the people (high school students) who had brought PC laptops to the event because when I plugged my iMac into the projector it worked no prob instantly. One person went through several people and must have spent at least 20-30 mins until they finally figured out how to get the laptop to display on the projector

a few people inquisitively asked why I mad brought my screen....they were a little surprised when they learned the truth.

it didn't look ghetto, it was pretty kewl (cue cartman voice) and easy.
another side note: Keynote kicks Powerpoint to the curb anyday

also coming from a person who has both an iMac and a SR MBP in the house. Take the MBP. Even if you don't think you need portability, it is very nice to have around house portability, surf in the easy chair, chat in bed, etc, etc, that can't be done with an iMac, not to mention you have a batt backup when/if the power goes out

I was impressed at the time as well! To be honest, I wouldn't trust myself on a bike with my computer on my back. That would be like walking on a tightrope, cheating death with every step. That's not the kind of pressure I want on my daily commute!

I agree, my nerves would be totally "shot" ..... not a great way to start the day ...

once i get my mac i'll be transporting it from home and work, to teach the kids mac, there all used to windows. i'm a tech. teacher. they dont know who apple is, unless you say that they made your ipod.

Yes, a 24".... I grabbed a XL t-shirt I had in the closet and dressed the iMac so no one could see what I was carrying, it was smooth, although, the iMac is NOT that light to carry around.

To be honest, August is comming and I'll be away for 2 weeks, I'm seriously thinking about taking the iMac with me.. but I must be mentally ill or something, because I just can't imagine myself away from my little baby and to carry only 2gb of music with me (iPod Nano 1stG).

And I bet I'm not the only one to feel this way here, I wish I had a MBP too...

i got my iMac at a time laptop were only G4, so this was not much of a choice for the machine and yes i'm carrying it around. One plug and a huge 20" screen... you can't beat that.
People can upload their pix and make right away a slide show...
I wouldn't do that everyday though and i only take it into my car where i found "the perfect position"

sure its portable enough, but its not something you'd want to be doing daily.
if you're going somewhere for say a week/weekend sure. for the occasional trip and move its great though, yes.

Except you'd have to have a display ready to plug into at all your destinations...

i only move my 20" around the house...sometimes i dont want to be stuck in the study so i drag it out into the living room so i can watch tv and be in a bit more of a open area....

I "regularly" take my 17" iMac to clients homes or offices to preview my work. They are each equally stunned by the ease and portability of "your entire computer... wheres the tower" of my iMac.

it also sets up so quick and does stuff that they obviously would never dream of doing with their PC... I just use the amazing box that it came in!
I think it adds to the wow factor.
I am just very careful with the box and it has lasted me a number of years. I am now on my second 17" iMac and so I have a new box as well.
