In our set up we use Transmission for large archives we need to share over our network.

Latey it seems whenever we use Transmission our internet drops. I couldn't say it's throttling because we can get 4mb/sec down at all different times during the day. There doesn't seem to be a specific bad time.

We've even set the port to 10700 which is a non-standard port for the BitTorrent network. It's outside of the usual port range. We also set port-forwarding in Airport Utility.

We have also set the down speed to 300KB/s which is far below any ISP throttling.

Any ideas?

Assuming you're using it for legal purposes, you could view DSLReports and see what they say. If not, you could run your connection through PIA, which is like 35 a year, and see what the result is. I believe you can get a 30 day access pass for four something. I've never used a torrent myself, but I do know certain ISPs will randomly slow down traffic on certain ports, especially if there are torrents involved, regardless of their legal status.

Sure. PIA is great, support is wonderful and the speeds are fast. I'm capable of getting around 80-95 Mbps out of 130 Mbps when my connection isn't lagging, though their servers.

I was using VPN Express in China last year. What are you using?

Oh that's an actual company name? Cause it also stands for Private Internet Access.

Oh, yes, of course. That is the name. I should have been clearer. A cursory query on Google doesn't really bring the site up. Contact them and explain your situation. They may provide a 24 hour or so redemption code so you can get an idea of how good they are. IIRC those visiting China use PIA to access what their great firewall hides away.

I haven't tried a VPN yet but just thought I'd add:

Transmission works if I set a limiter @ 300kbps/sec. Youtube flat out doesn't work for more than a few minutes before I have to reset my AEBS again. ESPECIALLY during the day.

ISP claims they don't do any shaping or throttling. I call BS.
