Any one care to explain?

i have a core duo mbp. I installed xcode with everything and got a new tab under prefrences called processors. its from checking the chud box when installing xcode.

Anyway it lets me change from one core to two cores. i was doing some perfomance and battery life test with both cores on and one core on. I went to system profiller and my processer read intel core solo.

could it be the same chip with just a core turned off? would any one with a core solo mac mini care to try and turn on the other core with chud?

Someone with a Core Solo won't be able to turn the other core on with CHUD tools because there isn't another core to turn on. The reason you see two cores is because your processor has two cores and you can selectively turn one off (thus effectively making your Core Duo into a Core Solo). Unfortunately this doesn't work the other way round.

Well, not exactly. A Solo is a Duo that failed part of testing, so one core is permanently disabled before going out to Apple or Dell. Apple's software cannot turn it back on.

that's pretty interesting, what happened to the battery life/performance with one core disabled?

I would hazard a guess that battery life/performance would be about the same depending on what you're doing. I guess it would be safe to say that your multi-tasking performance would plummet while single threaded apps performance wouldn't change that much.

ok here is the first of a list of performace/battery/heat for the mbp and chud.

One core web browsing full brightness bluetooth 2:28, 147f. one core total 2ghz.

this coreduotemp program is what im using for the temp and ghz totals. found out the core duo chip changes ghz like mad. any where from 1ghz to 2ghz per core.

get this dual core full birghtness bluestooth 2:40, 130f. dual core total 3ghz. (1.5ghz per core) im guessing it takes less power and creates less heat to run the two cores at 1.5ghz than one core at 2ghz. and you get a more poweful computer.
