I have had my iMac for about a year and a half and out of the blue the microphone stopped recording my voice and instead records a gurgling sound. Is there a way to maybe re-install the drivers for the mic? I want to try everything i can think of before i send it in to get repaired.

Any Help is much appreciated.

Before that, did you try plugging in a external microphone to the socket behind the display? Only then will you know it's a hardware or software issue - though it's unlikely to be the later. Unlike a PC, there are no drivers to install.

somewhat similar...

Somewhat similar situation: From time to time when I would start an iChat my microphone would not work. It turned out to be something to do with my external speaker connection. If I wiggled the speaker jack where it goes into the back of my iMac, there was a lot of static and the microphone would start working again.

When I updated to Snow Leopard, it seems to have caused additional problems. iTunes would start for no apparent reason, and start playing music randomly. Weird. I unplugged the speaker cable, and no problem since. I've ordered a new cable and hopefully that reolves all of these issues.

I have tried an external mic and i get the same results. I also tried a bluetooth headset with a mic in it and that completely crashed my system. I got a grey screen of death. I don't have any external speaker system hooked up to the iMac or anything.

Well thanks for the help, time to bring my mac to the crowded apple store and wait on line for an hour =D
