Runescape name: Redizhot

Hey guys, just wondering if any of you guys play Runescape these days. I've noticed it seems to be one of the most hated MMOs, largely because of people's 8 year-old perceptions of the game. I've been playing it on and off for nearly 10 years now, and am really surprised at how little recognition it gets in the gaming community. People still believe it's this boring grindfest, when it's seriously one of the best MMOs on the market.

I attribute this to people's past experiences of playing it as a kid in the library, chopping trees for hours on end. But several factors like 11 years of development time with consistent, significant weekly or bi-weekly content updates, it's large amount of non combat oriented content (tradeskills that are much more fleshed out than in most MMOs, which are often treated as less important parts of games), the fact that it predates WoW by several years means it doesn't fall prey to cloning the devices WoW employs (although it certainly has adopted many modern MMO devices), and quests that are actual QUESTS, involving great intrigue, story, puzzles and bosses.

Now's a better time than ever to start playing too, this fall they introduced a ton of great additions that reduce huge amounts of tedium to the game, like a toolbelt to hold all your basic tools, a money pouch (gold until this point was treated as an item, eating up inventory space, and being cumbersome if you forgot to bring a little cash), mousewheel controlled camera controls, and keyboard controls to advance chat. As well as introducing an excellent starting area for new players (unfortunately it's a P2P area), that while it definitely feels somewhat like a starting zone in other MMOs, really provides you with the framework to teach you how to play the game, and pointing you in important directions for your continued success as a new player. They also eliminated the vast majority of bots that were ruining the economy this october, and have continued their crusade against them, and have pretty successful.

I'll admit, the Free to Play offers very little content, but it's a great intro to the game. If you play the F2P for a few hours and like what you see, it's definitely worth coughing up the 8 bucks for a month of membership to see if you really like the game or not. The P2P offers SO much more, the F2P is frankly a waste of time past the first few days of playing.

Come at me haterz!
