hi mates! thanks for reading this.

my first question is i really want to use icloud but i use google sync with my google calendar, mail, contacts. i would not use icloud for this, correct?

i'm just trying to find a way to use iCloud.

secondly, this does not back up SMS alone does it?

i really really want to export my SMS messages somewhere. i don't care if it's to a excel, pdf, or hmtl. does anyone know a place i can do this or program, preferably free and works with ios5?

I was wondering the same thing.

Would it hurt or conflict to sync the contacts in 2 different places?

I personally switched my contacts and calendars over to iCloud last night. It took a couple of hours, but I'm loving it! I still use my gmail, I just disabled syncing of the calendars and contacts. I like it better because it works seamlessly with all of my iOS devices. I have it working perfectly between my iPhone 4, iPad, and MacBook Pro. I could never get the 3-way Google Sync to work quite right. It's perfect with iCloud. If you are pretty much exclusively using Apple products, I would switch over to iCloud.

Do you use gmail for your e-mail? if so, doesn't that prevent you from having all your contacts in your gmail though?

I dont see any reason to switch to iCloud, if you're happy with Gmail.

Gmail, Calendar and Contacts have seamlessly worked on my iPhone for years now. And those web apps are much more mature than Apple's new offerings. Sure Gmail may be a bit bloated, but I'll take those extra features of iClould's barebones web apps any day.

I use Google sync for mail & calendars (created a Google calendar that my wife and I share, and syncs with both of our iPhones), but not contacts.

I did set up contacts and calendar with iCloud, but not mail. Mail is backed up fine on Gmail.

I moved my contacts over to iCloud simply so Google Sync wouldn't keep killing all of my lovely full-screen caller ID photos.

Call me shallow.

Yea, I'm happy to stay with google... just gotta figure out this one problem I'm having with syncing multiple calendars and hiding some calendars from the notification bar https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=13591037&#post13591037

But I might just end up not syncing one of the calendars like they said. I only look at that calendar once a week if that. So I could easily just go online and look at it through google.

My only issue with gmail is that it does not push to my iPhone. It has never worked right, I don't know if I am doing something wrong. It was the only reason I was considering the apple email account.

I never had gmail not pushing... I did have problems with contacts though. I hope iOS 5 will fix that.

Brian,

Are you using Gmail through EXCHANGE, or through the IMAP (the Gmail prompt on the account set-up page)? IMAP will not push. Exchange will. It's a bit more complicated to set up. Try this:
