Hi,

I have a 2009 4,1 (flashed -> 5,1) 6-core 3.46 with a GT120 that really needs upgrading - it's pushing a 30" ACD and a 24" Dell - luckily I work in audio and not video :)

I was given a new (well, never used!) Sapphire 5770 (2x DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort) thinking that i could use the 5770 on the 30" and keep the GT120 for the boot screen and powering the 24".

It worked, however I got noisy expansion bay and PSU fans... i tried both slot 1 and slot 2 - slot 2 was a little lower in PSU/PCIe fan, but still too noisy for me. I have the machine in the studio so can't accept an increase in noise. I use iStat Pro but it won't affect those fans, for some reason.

Also, the OpenGL app trick didn't help at all, the fan speeds never dropped to normal.

I've googled around and many threads are old and have some conflicting info, so I suppose my questions are:

1) Is there a proper fix/solution to this now, in mid-late 2015?
2) Is there anything to say that, if i buy a 7950/7970/280x, I won't run into exactly the same issue?

Cheers!

1) Work around, use MacsFanControl to force the fan run at lower speed.

2) May hit the same issue with all those card.

Thanks guys. I went with Macs Fan Control in the end, as advised, and worked fine with both cards in the machine, along with a PCIe sound card. The fans ramp up during boot, then back down when the desktop loads.

I stopped using iStat for fan control, although it was nice that iStat allowed me to reduce the exhaust fan to 500, instead of the minimum of 600 in Mac Fans Control. As I record audio, it's nice to drop it super low for a little while when recording critical stuff.

I won't flash this card as i'll probably upgrade to a 280x at some point, but this is a great upgrade for free/now.

Thanks again
