Hi,
I have a 2009 4,1 (flashed -> 5,1) 6-core 3.46 with a GT120 that really needs upgrading - it's pushing a 30" ACD and a 24" Dell - luckily I work in audio and not video![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
I was given a new (well, never used!) Sapphire 5770 (2x DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort) thinking that i could use the 5770 on the 30" and keep the GT120 for the boot screen and powering the 24".
It worked, however I got noisy expansion bay and PSU fans... i tried both slot 1 and slot 2 - slot 2 was a little lower in PSU/PCIe fan, but still too noisy for me. I have the machine in the studio so can't accept an increase in noise. I use iStat Pro but it won't affect those fans, for some reason.
Also, the OpenGL app trick didn't help at all, the fan speeds never dropped to normal.
I've googled around and many threads are old and have some conflicting info, so I suppose my questions are:
1) Is there a proper fix/solution to this now, in mid-late 2015?
2) Is there anything to say that, if i buy a 7950/7970/280x, I won't run into exactly the same issue?
Cheers!
