Got a 2010 15" Macbook Pro with 8 GB ram and 250 GB SSD. It runs like a champ on El Capitan. Zero issues. With that being said, is there any reason why I would want to upgrade the operating system to Sierra? Given the age of my computer, will I be gaining any advantages with Sierra over El Capitan?

My mum did the upgrade on her own and it seems to be fine. It has a third party SSD drive and I'm not sure about TRIM support. However she opted in the Desktop and Documents folder to iCloud Drive feature.

Any good reason not to?

I was actually positively surprised by Sierra during the beta, though I never thought that El Capitan ran that particularly well, at least not on my 2008 MacBook. I think you should take the plunge, if you have no particular objections.
